Coming to Terms with Mr. Right - Lisa C.Clark

    One

Trey was dead. Amy MacKenzie had barely known her darling Trey before he was swept out of her life forever. He was killed in a plane crash on his way to carry out his duties as a doctor. His body was lost in some foreign land and she would never see him again.

    Never again.

It wasn’t just that he was someone she felt an instant attraction to and who she had resisted as hard as she could, Trey Wyngard was one of the richest men in the world who devoted his life to humanitarianism.

It wasn’t just that he was a good man either.

Amy struggled with saying it even to herself here in the solitude of her mother and stepfather’s Houston condo. Trey Wyngard was her future, her love, her life. Even though she had just recently come to this realization, she knew it as surely as she knew her own name.

Amy could not get her mind around the fact that Trey was dead. It was unbelievable. Amy was not sure she could function ever again. She was not sure of anything. Life was dull and tasteless. Her mother insisted that she come and stay with her and her new husband until more details were known. Her best friend Gloria insisted that Amy listen to her mother.

So here she was sitting in the spare bedroom in Karen and David Winter’s condo. Amy was numb. She felt sick. It was like a very bad dream except for the first few minutes of the day. When she first woke in the morning there were those few minutes of feeling all right and then she remembered that Trey was gone. Dead.

It had only been two days but it felt like an eternity. Her mother and David were still waiting for official word on Trey’s death. David was in constant contact with Trey’s father and there was something about planning a funeral and arranging a wake that allowed the family to find the closure that they desperately needed. Karen had explained this to her daughter and since they had mourned together when Amy’s father died, Amy knew what she meant.

Sitting on the side of her bed and coming to the realization that Trey was indeed dead, Amy felt bereft, lonely, and lost. She and Trey had barely begun a relationship and she kept telling herself that the loss would’ve been even more powerful if they had had several years together.

She knew that this wasn’t the case. She knew that the loss of what might’ve been was even greater than the loss of what had been. If they had time together she would at least have those memories. As it was, she barely had any memories with Trey and memories that she did have were clouded by the intrusion of the woman who claimed to be his fiancée.

Amy kept telling herself that it was a good idea to be at her mother and David’s place because she did offer some solace to them. She knew that
