CHAPTER 1

Taylor Madison

Kyle had smiled knowingly at me just moments ago. A piece of hair fell across my face, so I brushed it away. I felt as though Kyle was watching me. Looking at me with desire. I would go so far as to say lust. But is that truly possible?

Okay, so Kyle seems to remember me. But does he want me the way that I want him? I'm not sure that it makes any sense. Look at him. He's so handsome and sexy. And rich and powerful. What could a man like Kyle Bennett possibly want from me? Besides, he's now my boss. Nothing can happen between us – even if we both want it to.

And that's a big IF. Kyle can probably have any woman that he wants. Why would he want me? I need to put these thoughts out of my mind or it will drive me crazy. I can't afford to mess up this internship.

Have a good first day. Maddie's voice breaks through to my daydreaming mind. I look up and realize that the meeting is over. I don't remember hearing anything that Kyle said to us. Damn. Now I am going to look like a fool in front of him.

Yeah, you too. Have a good day, I replied to Maddie.

I look over and a small group of interns are gathering near Kyle. Other groups are forming near other smartly dressed men and women. Okay, we must be breaking up into our departments. I get up and cross the conference room, hoping that I am right about this.

My heart is pounding. I'm nervous to be up close to Kyle. I have no idea how this is going to play out. Just be cool, I tell myself. You're an intern. He's your boss. Treat it that way. Because that is what this relationship is going to be this summer. Nothing more.

Great. It looks like we are all here, said Kyle as he looked at our small group. There are four of us in total. All female. All young and eager to impress. All hoping to land a job offer by the end of the summer. I wondered if any of the others also wanted to get in Kyle's pants. Probably, on some fantasy level. But do any of them have a real chance? Listen to me. I'm acting like Kyle Bennett is mine. Like something is going to happen between us.

Kyle is playing it cool. He is not giving any indication that he knows me. Probably an act in front of the other interns. He looks at each of us and smiles. A thousand watt smile. Okay, please follow me, he tells us.

Our small group follows Kyle to the Human Resources department down the hall. The department sits beyond two glass doors. There are about a dozen cubicles in the center of the room. Offices surround the space on the outer edges. It looked pretty much like most corporate offices do. Three employees stepped out of their offices and stood near our group.

You will each be working for a different member of the Human Resources team, Kyle told us. But much of our work is done as part of the department as a whole. We, as a department, are responsible for every aspect of employee relations at Bennworth. From recruitment, hiring, employment practices, salary and benefits, training, and, unfortunately, when necessary, discipline policies. He looked down at a notepad that he held in his hand.

Janet, you will be with Ms. Bradley. Monique, you will be with Mr. Swanson. Rachel, you will be with Ms. Connors. Taylor, you will be with me.

No surprise there. I had listed my area of interest as recruitment. Nonetheless, I think Kyle made sure that he would be my supervisor. Oh no, . . .did I only get this internship because of him? Because he recognized my name and wanted me to be here? I hoped not. I believed that I deserved to be here on my own merits. Although, it would be kinda romantic if Kyle influenced things to have me close.

Janet, Monique, and Rachel met their direct supervisors. Kyle looked at me and smiled. This looked to be a million watt smile. I smiled back. I wasn't sure what to say with the others still close by, so I said nothing. I was following Kyle's cues. I decided to see how he was going to play this.

Everyone, have a great first day, he called out to the group. Then he spoke directly to me. Miss Madison, please follow me to my office. He turned and walked down the hall and I followed. At the end of the hall he entered his office. He stood near his office door as I walked in. He closed the door behind me.

CHAPTER 2

It was a large corner office. The two outside walls were almost entirely windows. Beyond them was the busy activity of downtown Los Angeles on a workday. The furniture was modern. Shiny glass, metal, and leather. Kyle's desk was positioned in the corner and looked out over the office. To the right of the desk was a small sitting area with a modern leather couch and two matching chairs. A glass and steel coffee table sat in the middle.

Kyle walked over to a credenza and picked up a bottle of water in each hand. He held one out. Water? he asked.

Sure. Thank you, I replied. He handed me the bottle.

Please, have a seat. Anywhere you like, he said to me.

I sat on the couch. I opened the bottled of water and took a sip. Kyle sat in one of the chairs opposite the couch. The chair directly across from where I was sitting. I tried not to  read anything in to that. Although my mind was racing with so many questions.

It was a pleasant surprise when I saw that you had applied for the summer intern program.

Pleasant surprise. Hmm. Okay, that is certainly good. But it could mean anything. A pleasant surprise because I seemed like a nice person. Or that I seemed bright and capable. Both, perhaps. Or a pleasant surprise because he wants to screw my brains out. That is probably just
