    Beautiful Pleasures Part 4 - E.J. Adams

    CHAPTER 1

    Kyle Bennett

A helicopter circled above the cliff just off the Pacific Coast Highway. Police, Fire Rescue, and EMTs were on the scene. News crews had arrived and were stationed just outside the stretch of road that the police had blocked off.

At first no one new the identity of the accident victim. The expensive sports car was badly mangled. The license plate could not be read from the roadside. Expensive sports cars were fairly common in that part of southern California. It could be almost anybody.

The rescue team worked quickly, but carefully, to reach the car. The victim is male, said the lead rescue worker. He is unconscious and badly hurt, but still alive.

There was that momentary relief that the victim had vital signs. But the experienced rescue team knew that time was short. The injuries were serious and would require immediate attention. There were likely internal injuries, but it is was difficult to know for sure with just a visible inspection of the situation.

The rescue team extracted the victim from the car. A member of the rescue team thought she recognized the face. I think he is Kyle Bennett, she announced. A later check of his wallet would confirm that fact. The rescue team carried Kyle up the side of the hill to the waiting ambulance.

The EMTs did what they could on the scene and continued to tend to his wounds while in transit to the hospital. The ambulance siren wailed as it sped away. A police car followed. The news crews finished their reporting from the scene and headed to the hospital for updates to the story. Police investigators stayed to piece together evidence of what had happened.

Within minutes, the ambulance arrived at the Emergency Room entrance to the hospital. The EMTs wheeled Kyle in on the stretcher to a waiting team of ER doctors and nurses. Kyle was rushed into an operating room. Kyle's immediate fate rested in the hands of the training and skills of the ER doctors and nurses.

    CHAPTER 2

    The Bennetts

Chase Bennett sat sulking in a living room chair of his parents' massive living room. His broken nose had been set and bandaged. His eyes were bruised.

You look like shit, Chad Bennett observed. Why the hell didn't you cover your face?

He swung too fast. I never even saw his fist, Chase replied as he looked toward the floor.

How many times are you going to let your little brother kick your ass? asked Chad with a disgusted tone to his voice.

We're not kids anymore, replied Chase. Kyle is the same size.

That has never mattered, Chase. Kyle has always gotten the better of you. Perhaps it is time that you toughen up a bit.

While Chad favored Chase for his business acumen, he had always been disappointed by the fact that Chase could not hold his own against his younger brother. The two brothers got into scuffles as kids, as many brothers do, and Kyle always came out the victor.

Don't worry, Kyle is going to pay dearly. I'm going to file assault charges against him, Chase said.

You will do no such thing! barked Chad.

Why not? He simply walked up to me and broke my nose.

I don't care. That is between you and your brother. We will not be broadcasting Bennett family business for the whole world to scrutinize.

All you care about is how this will look? What about my getting justice for what Kyle did to me?

Justice? For what Kyle did to you? . . . If you want justice, break Kyle's nose.

What kind of 'eye for an eye' bullshit advice is that?

The only kind that I am going to give you. There will be absolutely no police. No lawyers. I will not allow the Bennett family name to be tarnished in any way.

It's all about public perception with you? Isn't it?

Of course. The Bennett name is a top brand. It must be protected at all costs.

So how do I explain this? Chase asked as he pointed to his bandaged nose and bruised face.

Chad shrugged his shoulders. I don't know. Say it was a biking accident. You fell while mountain biking. Short and simple. Move on from this, Chase. The company and our name are more important than a broken nose. The nose will heal. Bad publicity could bring lasting damage.

Chase just shook his head. He didn't know why he had expected a different outcome. His father never wavered when it came to protecting the Bennett name and his company. Money ruled Chad Bennett's world. The family fortune was more important than the family itself. The family only mattered in as much as the public image it portrayed to keep them making more money.

I think we are done here, Chad announced. Chase stood to leave the living room. He would retreat to his wing of the mansion. His father would have a few drinks and then retreat to his wing. Chase's mother was likely already in hers. She rarely made an appearance when either Chad or Chase were home.

As Chase crossed the living room, he stopped
