A doctor, a lawyer and a fundraiser die and go to Heaven together.
At the Pearly Gates, St. Peter says to the doctor, Welcome. Before you go in we can grant you one wish.
The doctor thinks for a minute and says, I’d like a $1,000,000 in cash!
St. Peter gives him the money and sends him in.
The lawyer walks up and St. Peter says the same thing. Before you go in we can grant you one wish.
The lawyer says, I’d like $2,000,000 in cash!
St. Peter gives him the $2,000,000 and sends him in.
The fundraiser walks up and St. Peter says, Before you go in we can grant you one wish.
The fundraiser leans in close and whispers, I’d like the names of the doctor and the lawyer.

Introduction
ANOTHER BOOK ON FUNDRAISING! ABOUT TIME!
I doubt that is what you thought when you saw this book because there are plenty of good books on development out there already. They are well-written and helpful. When you read them you can hear a paternalistic voice in your head, telling you everything will work out fine. The voice is wise. Seasoned. Rational. Calm. Level-headed. Sensible. That voice has an answer for everything. If you never did development work but only read about it, you might think it must be easy, almost boring. But it is not.
This book is not about fundraising, but about being a fundraiser.
The real world of development and the idealized world presented in the fundraising literature are as alike as your current job and what you thought it would be like when you signed up. Fundraising is never neat, never predictable and a lot more fun.
Yes, more fun. I decided to write this book when looking through a magazine put out by one of the fine national organizations serving our profession. It was well done and chock full of facts, tips and trends. But it lacked the spirit of the actual work we do.
For instance, the literature skirts around a basic fact we all learned in our first month on the job. People are not rational decision-making machines motivated by the higher angels of their natures. People are a little crazy. And we are a little crazy for trying to get money from them. It’s crazy on crazy. That keeps it entertaining.
That kind of joy and energy gets lost in the translation to books, articles and conferences. Perhaps this
