Foreword
It was no surprise when my friend Paul Brodie approached me about a book he was putting together. I first met Paul about three years into my tenure as the President and CEO of the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce. Paul is an active member of our business community, and I’ve genuinely enjoyed getting to know him. We have discussed his philosophy towards life and business at length, including what drove him into the book publishing business. I must admit, he has piqued my curiosity about publishing my own story. When Paul approached me about writing a book that would involve the stories of our chamber members, I asked him to let me write the foreword. Everything we do, we do together. We support each other, because together, we succeed. But wait, I am getting ahead of myself. Let me go back a few years and paint a picture.
In January of 2015, I had a bold decision to make. Do I stay in the corporate world in California working for a Fortune 500 company, or do I make the decision to move back to Texas and accept the position as President and CEO of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce? My nearly 20 years at Intel Corporation had been good to me. I loved the culture at Intel, and as the Director of Intel’s Corporate Responsibility Office, I had a big impact on the company and communities across the globe.
My parents were firm believers in community engagement. They played an active role as community builders. Prior to my time at Intel, I had the opportunity to work in the Reagan and Bush administrations. President Reagan believed strongly that business had a responsibility to build communities and that government needed to stay out of the way. Intel aligned perfectly with President Reagan’s belief and made community impact a core value.
I was privileged to witness amazing leadership from Intel’s Gordon Moore and Andy Grove as well as President Ronald Reagan,
President George H.W. Bush, and Secretary Jack Kemp. Working for these exemplary men provided me the equivalent of a leadership Ph.D. After reflecting on all those that defined my leadership style, it became clear that it was time to go back to what I had been trained to do my whole life. It was time to shift my focus from global to local impact. Also, I must admit, the desire to run my own show was very compelling.
The Arlington Chamber had just gone through a rough period of time and was in a financial and emotional rut. Membership had fallen below 900, and there did not seem to be clear alignment across the members on a common purpose. The confusion on the Chamber’s role caused trust to plummet to an all-time low. Before I could steer the ship, we had to right it together as a team and as a community. There were two critical things that had to happen.
First, we needed a clear, actionable, and inspiring purpose. We quickly landed on a new mission statement that became our guiding light. Together, we champion economic and community prosperity.
The mission was then supported by four pillars, grow our member’s business, foster economic development, amplify the voice of business, and develop the community’s future. We were now off and running on a common purpose inspired by the shared goal of community and economic prosperity. We created steps that allowed our members and staff to champion each other.
Second, we needed to restore and build trust. The first word of our mission statement was key. Together is a powerful word. It set the cultural foundation for how we would operate. If everyone shared the belief that we would work in concert instead of being driven by individual wants, then second-guessing would end, and trust would begin to form. I am so proud of how our members have embraced the notion of togetherness. The real truth is most of our members were already there. We, the organization, had just been letting them down. Of course, we all have individual wants and needs that are critical to our personal success. However, it’s important to realize the best way to achieve your goals is by building relationships with others who will support you, mentor you, do business with you, and yes, trust you. Our mission remains a driving force, and it led us to change our name and define our organization with a new tagline Together, we succeed.
Now, I’m proud to say that we have succeeded in creating synergy throughout the business community, and the future of greater Arlington has never looked brighter.
When I asked Paul to let me write the forward to his next book, I knew it was a compilation of stories that would include many of our chamber members and business owners pursuing their passions. Paul wants to celebrate the small business leaders of our community, highlighting the innumerable paths that lead to entrepreneurship. By giving them the opportunity to share their truths, he has put a spotlight on these hard-working men and women who have persevered through obstacles and fears to get to where they are today.
Paul created an anthology of life as an entrepreneur in the American Dream City and across the world. In reading the Get Published Business Book, you will join more than 30 members of the Greater Arlington Chamber of Commerce on their journeys. I hope their stories of investing in themselves, empowering others, and unlocking the potential of their community, will empower you to meet your personal goals because together, we succeed!

Introduction
Eight years ago, I had a health crisis. I was close to 340 pounds with borderline type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure. My doctor told me that if I did not change my lifestyle then I would be dead in five years. That moment changed my life.
I got my act together and lost over sixty pounds and more importantly kept most of the weight off. Statistics show that only 5 percent of people who lose significant weight keep it off over time. I was blessed to be part of that 5 percent. Due to changing my life I wanted to share my story with the world. Only problem was that I had no clue how to do it.
Throughout my life I always had a dream of writing a book. Over the next four years I kept thinking about getting that book written as I wanted to share my weight loss journey. My goal was not to just share the victories, but also the struggles.
Finally, on a flight to Las Vegas in June 2015, I had an epiphany. I was going to write the book and figure out the rest of the process later. During that time, I had several friends who published their own books. I thought that if they could do it then I could do it as well.
The next morning, while sitting poolside at the Mirage Hotel and Casino, I created an outline of the book on my iPhone. One week later, I sat down in my living room and typed over 20,000 words over three days and completed my first draft of the book. The book was called Eat Less and Move More. Now I had to figure out everything else.
First goal was to find an editor. I took a risk and reached out to this amazing young lady I met during a conference in Chicago. Devin was a recent college graduate and I knew that she has a passion for helping others. When I reached out to her about editing the book, she mentioned she was a grammar perfectionist and could help me. Devin did a great job with editing my book.
Next step was to find a formatter, book cover designer, and I had to learn how to distribute my book. During the month of July, I spent eight hours a day learning everything about how to get published and then an additional eight hours a day about how to market my book.
In August 2015, I launched Eat Less and Move More, and it became my first bestseller. I launched two more books that year and they also became bestsellers. Then my life changed as readers and fellow authors asked if I could help them with getting published.
Over the next eighteen months I coached people on how to successfully publish and market their book while still teaching full time. In June 2017, I decided to take the leap and left teaching to focus full time on helping people share their story with the world.
We also expanded from one-on-one coaching to offering an online program with video modules. Within a few months we expanded to done for you book publishing and book launch marketing services. One year later we added our executive ghostwriting service to help those who did not want to write their own book share their story effectively through interviews with me to share their story.
I wanted to share my own story in this book because sharing your story can change your life. It did for me with Eat Less and Move More and now we are helping 75 people share their story with our first Get Published Business Book.
By reading this book you will learn from 75 people who are sharing their own story. At the end of each chapter you will notice either the website or email address of the co-author. This is an invitation for you to connect and learn more about the co-author and how they help others. I am making it my mission to help as many people as possible share their story because everyone has something wonderful to share with the world.
On the next page is an invitation to take part in our second Get Published Business Book. If you are wanting to share your story with the world then I encourage you to check out
