Dreams Unwind - Nikki N Calvert

    Prologue

This is a huge mistake , she thought as she pulled into the parking lot of the beautiful old house. Not really a house, anymore. Years ago a woman had turned her childhood home into a restaurant called Willows. It had been a huge success in this small town. People had driven from miles away to eat at Willows and enjoy the view of the graceful willow trees sloping down to a small pond near the home. Looking towards the front doors she read, The New Willows. Her gaze shifted to the sign in the front lawn announcing the grand opening of The New Willows, soon. A wry smile appeared on her lips as she thought to herself, yeah right, it will still be just plain Willows to the residents of this town. She’d bet her life on that fact.

For five years this place had been empty, after the owner had died. Now with an extensive remodel inside and a fresh coat of paint outside, it was reopening. She had read about this restaurant, the good times shared and the memories of past times, and couldn’t resist coming to see it with her own eyes. But really, why was she here? Curiosity killed the cat or so they say. A single light was coming from deep within the back of the restaurant, perhaps for security. It was after midnight and she was positive all the construction workers were gone. Feeling safe, she left her car to have a look around. Not much could be seen as she peeked through the windows, just dark shapes was all she could make out.

Rounding the corner, she walked to the steps leading down to a concrete patio, setup with tables and chairs shaded by large umbrellas. Weather permitting, diners could sit outside to enjoy their meal for a closer view of the majestic willow trees. Without conscious thought, her feet took her down the steps for a closer look. The dark shapes of the willows gently swaying in the breeze had a calming effect on her. She closed her eyes, smiling slightly, as her thoughts drifted. Sighing softly, she started to turn to walk back up the steps. Hit by a blinding light, she held up a hand to block the light.

Who the hell do you think you are snooping around here at night? demanded a male voice from the darkness. Her first thought was to run. As her feet began to move, his voice rang out again. Don’t move! I have a gun!

She froze. Dear Lord, what have I gotten myself into? Slowly, with her hands held out, she turned towards the voice coming from the dark above her. I meant no harm. I read about this place reopening and wanted to see it for myself. Since I was passing through town, I thought I’d stop and check it out. Unfortunately, I was delayed and didn’t reach town until just a few minutes ago. Truly, I just wanted to have a look around, nothing more. The blinding light was switched off.

I believe you, the man began, amusement clearly in his voice. I was working late and saw your shadow out here. Your shadow was a lot bigger than you actually are and spooked me just a bit.

Still holding her hands out, she began to cautiously move towards the front of the building, saying, I’m sorry to have bothered you. I’ll just be on my way now.

Wait! I don’t really have a gun. See, he said, holding his hands out into the light coming from the moon, as he carefully kept the rest of his body in the shadows. He even turned them, so she could get a good look. Would you like to get a look inside? Everything is done except for the kitchen. That’s where I was working when I got a glimpse of your shadow. The boss wanted it done yesterday, you know, he joked.

The woman smiled slightly. One of those bosses, huh?

Yeah, he’s a real gem. Well, do you want to be the first to see the place or not?

She’d love to have a look around, but could she trust this stranger, this man? She couldn’t risk it. Shaking her head, she said, No thank you. I should be going.

As she began to walk away, he called out, I’ll turn on every light in the place. You’ll be completely safe, I promise. Do you really want to pass up this opportunity?

His deep voice had a reassuring quality to it and she found herself turning back around once more. This time she walked towards the steps leading up to where the man still stood in the shadows, saying, Why not.

The man led the way into the restaurant and true to his word, he switched all the lights on, giving her a stunning view of what the new owner had accomplished. It was breathtakingly beautiful, but so down to earth at the same time. The new owner had somehow managed to make you feel at home in an elegant surrounding. Absolutely amazed, she turned to tell the man how impressed she was, but instead was awestruck by the man himself. He made the room’s beauty fade in comparison. Tall, dark, and handsome, she thought with a sigh. His physique was muscular, probably from doing construction for years. She guessed him to be in his late thirties. His dark hair had gray streaks at his temples and there were laugh lines at the corner of his eye. The knowing smile on his lips had her blushing like a schoolgirl.

His deeply amused voice jarred her back to reality when he said, "Come on, I’ll show you the rest of the place.

Maybe, I should leave, she said, in a strangled voice.

Cocking his head to the side as he stared down at her, he said, He’s turned the upstairs into private dining areas for parties and events. Are you sure you don’t want to be the first to see?

I ... I thought the upstairs was ... was a living area, she stammered.

It was, but Mr. Tylerson thought the space could be put to better use, he answered with a shrug.

You mean so he could make even more money off this town. Guess he’s one of those men that only think about their profits, not what the people here can afford. I’m sure this town won’t be up to his standards, she said snidely.

The man’s lips tightened and his expression became guarded. The man’s a nice guy. He treats his workers fair and pays well. And he knows what kind of town this place is and wanted to give them a nice place to go for a night out. He’s not trying to part them from their hard earned money, he’s trying to give them a home away from home. Everyone in this town welcomed him here with open arms and he’s just trying to give back, not take advantage.

She dropped her eyes to say, I’m sorry. Sometimes I let my thoughts cloud my judgement. I didn’t mean to offend.

He nodded, then asked, Would you like to see where he lives, after I show you the party rooms upstairs?

Her head snapped up. I thought there were no living areas upstairs.

There isn’t. His apartment is over the building out back. The lower level is a garage slash storage area for the restaurant. I stay there sometimes because ... well, I guess you could say because I’m his right hand man, he said with a chuckle, lighty gripping her elbow, sending a shock up her arm and shivers throughout her body, as he led her up the stairs.

What was she doing, following this stranger across the lawn? Reaching the building behind the restaurant, the man unlocked the door to reveal stairs leading up to an apartment. At the top he unlocked another door, holding it open for her to proceed him, inside. She stepped into a bachelors domain, all leather and dark wood. From the living room you could see into the kitchen and dining area. A glass and chrome table with black leather chairs caught her eye as she stood in the center of the living room.

He placed his warm hands on her shoulders, leaning to place his lips near her ear, to ask softly, Would you like to see the bedroom? Her slight nod had him smiling as he slid his hands slowly down her arms. Taking her hand in his he led her to the bedroom.

The first thing she saw in the morning, when she woke up, was a picture of a little girl and boy on the bedside table. Were they the owners children or did they belong to the man she’d had sex with last night? Throwing the sheet back she slid out of bed and gathered her clothes before heading to the bathroom. After dressing, she picked up her keys laying next to the picture of the children. She refused to let her eyes linger on the picture, again. They were of no concern to her, she told herself. She was halfway across the living room when she heard his voice coming from the kitchen.

Don’t rush off. I’ve made breakfast. She took another step, without looking his way. Please don’t make me chase you this early in the morning. Come eat.

As she walked towards him, she noticed a covered dish in front of a chair to his left. She sat down as he removed the cover, revealing an omelet and toast. Grinning he said, Nothing fancy. I do hope you like it. Coffee?

    She nodded, saying, Thank you.

Please, go ahead and eat. Sorry, I was too hungry to wait on you. Guess I worked up quite the appetite last night, he said with an easy smile.

Ignoring his comment, she picked up her fork and took a bite. It was actually delicious. After a few more bites, she said, This is good. Thank you.

The man folded the paper he’d been reading and laid it down next to his empty plate. Taking a sip of coffee, he stared a moment before saying, So, should I call you Jade? No, I don’t think so. Jade doesn’t suit you at all. Now, Kimber, that name has potential. I like that name. Yes, that’s what I’ll call you, Kimber. Unless of course you prefer something else, that is, he said with a sly wink.

She dropped her fork with a clatter. Horrified she pushed away from the table, turning to run from the apartment. He didn’t try to stop her, but she heard him call out, You can call me Ty, Kimber. We’re going to be close friends, you and I.

Back in her car she took deep breaths, trying to calm herself. How? How did he know? Her gaze slid to her portfolio and purse, both laying in the passenger seat. The dirty rotten son-of-a-bitch had taken her keys during the night and gone through her things. Glancing back up, she caught sight of the man leaning against the corner of the building, watching her. She should never have read those letters. They weren’t hers to read. But lord, they had been filled with so many stories. Stories that she had already began to turn into romance novels in her head. The possibilities were endless.

She had remained anonymous all these years. Only a handful of people knew who she really was. Now a stranger knew and she had no idea what he’d do with the information. Damn those letters and damn her curiosity, too. The man raised his hand as she continued to stare. Tearing her eyes away, she drove off sick at heart over what she’d let happen.

Three months later, as she finished another novel, she leaned back in her chair to gaze out her window, wondering why the man had kept her secret. He had been on her mind a lot lately. Had he forgotten her? Had she been so easily forgotten? Why did she care? Her life was her own and he didn’t matter. That was a lie. He had set her senses on fire that night. If she were honest, she’d admit it scared her how much she wanted to lay in his arms again. Her life was changing and she didn’t know how she would deal with the changes coming her way. She sighed, resting her cheek on the cool window pane, letting her mind drift.

A knock brought her back from her thoughts. Without moving she called out, Come on in the door’s unlocked.

    Hello Kimber, remember me?

Her head whipped around and her gaze locked with the very man she had just been thinking about. How did you find me? she asked in a stunned voice.

Oh Kimber honey, I’ve always known where to find you, he drawled as he began to swagger to where she was sitting at her desk.

Jumping up, she circled around her loveseat to avoid him. He continued on to her desk, sitting in the chair she’d just vacated. Picking up a framed picture, he studied it a moment before laying it face down. As his eye caught hers, he smiled mockingly. Next he opened her laptop and began to read. His smile broadened, while she watched him read. Shutting the laptop, he turned to face her.

Why are you here? she asked in a near whisper.

I’m here because I was tired of waiting for you to come back. He stood up and walked to stand before her. This time she stood her ground. His hand came up to cup her cheek. Smiling, he said, I think it’s time for us to create our own romance. What do you say Kimber? Her lips meeting his lips was the only answer he needed. So it begins, he thought, so it begins.

    Chapter 1

Mike Ackman was enjoying a leisurely lunch with friends and co-workers, down by his lake. They had been helping him set up two tents for the big party tomorrow. His grandad, Charles Ackman, would be celebrating his eighty-fifth birthday on Sunday with his family. Taylor, Mike’s wife, had come up with the idea of having another party on Saturday for all of Charles’ friends and business associates, from over the years, to attend to help celebrate this major milestone with him. Charles was still active in the community and had many friends.

His age hadn’t really slowed him down that much. He would laugh about his slower gait saying, it just gave him more time to enjoy his surroundings. All in all, Charles was still the pillar of their family. They still leaned on him and his wisdom to see them through the ups and downs of their lives. He was the voice of reason.

Mike took another look at the group of men sitting around eating the lunch he had provided as a way of saying thank you for their hard work. Smiling, he said, Hey guys, I can’t thank you enough for helping me with all this today.

No problem boss, Dave answered with a grin. We’d do anything you asked, as long as you pay us.

After a round of laughter, Andy said, You know we all think the world of Charles. We’d do whatever it takes to make tomorrow special for him. The other men mumbled their agreement.

Mike nodded. Thanks. After we finish eating, I don’t think it will take us long to finish up. Once it’s all done, you can call it a day and go home early, with pay. Monday morning, first thing, meet me back down here to clean up, okay? They all nodded. And don’t forget to show up for the party tomorrow, Mike told them with a grin. His smile grew when the men all agreed they wouldn’t miss out on a chance to eat all the free food Mike was supplying.

Dave shook his head, mumbling, Assholes. Turning back towards Mike he asked, What are you doing tonight for Taylor’s birthday?

Decorating down here and roasting hotdogs. Oh yeah, Tay wants to make s’mores, too. I kid you not, Mike added when Dave gave him a skeptical look. That’s what she wants, so everyone’s coming out to help.

Huh, I just thought you would want to do something extra special this year after ... well you know ... Dave’s voice kind of trailed off as he broke eye contact, to look out across the lake.

Mike knew Dave was referring to Taylor being declared cancer free back in July. It had been a long five years for Mike, waiting to hear those words, cancer free. And he had been planning something special, but Tay had thrown a wrench in his plans. Making his wife happy was a priority for Mike, so if she wanted to spend her birthday decorating, roasting hotdogs and making s’mores, so be it. If that’s what Tay wanted he’d make damn sure that’s exactly what she got. Besides, he still had something up his sleeve to knock her socks off for their anniversary. Mike chuckled out loud as he imagined her delight and their night together.

Dave nudged Mike with his foot. I know you. You’re up to something, aren’t you?

Grinning like a school boy, Mike said, Yeah, maybe I am. Since she messed up my plans for her birthday, I’m going all out for our anniversary on Tuesday. I’ve already set it up with Tim over at Willows. He’s having one of the private dining rooms decorated with our wedding colors and there will be soft music playing. He’s having his chef prepare Taylor’s favorite meal from appetizer to dessert. The lights will be turned low and we’ll eat by candlelight. And I want a butt load of flowers, too. Tim’s taking care of everything for me, since I have all this going on this weekend, he said, waving a hand around to encompass their surroundings. Tim’s a great guy, always willing to lend a helping hand when you need it.

Yeah, but I wonder why he gave up everything to move here of all places.

Mike shrugged, Said he was tired of the big city and running a company that his Dad had inherited from his Father. To hear him tell it, he was interested in the work they did, but not the business side of a large company. After his parents died, he sold the company and moved to Lewisson.

So, this guy sells a huge construction business that builds all over the United States, and settles in a little town in Illinois to run a restaurant and a bar. Please. That’s some bullshit there, is all I’m saying, Dave said, shaking his head.

I like the guy. He renovated and reopened Willows, making it better than ever. When he took over The Club and remodeled the place, it became the hot spot for miles around, just like it was back in the day. He’s done the community a lot of good, is all I’m saying. Besides, Tim told my Mom he had roots in Illinois and decided to come back and see what he thought. When he found Willows for sale he jumped on the opportunity. Mike shrugged again, before saying, Guess at first it was just an investment, but he liked it here and decided to stay.

Whatever, Mike. I still think it odd he came and went for two years, then suddenly sold his business and moved here permanently. Enough about the great Tim Tylerson. Tell me what you bought Taylor for an anniversary gift.

Mike’s smile was blinding as he said, Jewelry, what else. I had a special necklace designed for her. It has two teardrop stones, a sapphire and an emerald, with a silver heart between the two stones. The stones are our birthstones and on the back of the heart, I had our initials and wedding date engraved.

Jesus Mike, you are such a fucking romantic ass. You make the rest of us look bad. You know that, right?

Mike laughed when the rest of the men sided with Dave. Feeling a bit self-conscious, he said, Come on, let’s get the tables and chairs set up under the tents, so you pussies can go home early.

The church they attended had let them borrow tables and chairs for the party tomorrow, so long as they were returned before church services Sunday morning. Plus, all of Mike’s family had offered the use of their lawn furniture for the crowd they were expecting. It didn’t take long for Mike and his crew to finish setting up for the party. Waving, he thanked them again reminding them once more to come to the party as they ambled off. Mike walked around, checking everything one more time before heading up to his house.

Later that evening, as they decorated, Sarah, suggested they wait till morning to inflate the balloons. Taylor smiled at her Mother-in-law as she tied another large bow  saying, That sounds like a good idea. Mike and I can come down early and finish that up. I’m sure the kids will want to help, too.

Jason and I will come out to help. We don’t have anything else planned for the morning. Oh, we can stop at the bakery for doughnuts on our way out here. That is, if you promise to make plenty of coffee.

Taylor nodded, saying, Deal. The caterers will start setting up around nine. Could you get here before then to help direct their set up, while the rest of us do the balloons?

Of course, dear. I’m really looking forward to the party tomorrow. It sounds silly, but I can just feel the excitement brewing in the air, Sarah said, with a self-conscious laugh.

Taylor hugged Sarah, telling her, It doesn’t sound silly at all. We all love a good party every now and then.

True to her word, Sarah and Jason arrived with enough doughnuts to feed an army, early the next morning. After eating, Charles drove Sarah along with Mike and Taylors young daughter, Mary, down to the lake in his golf cart. Taylor and her two sons trailed behind. Jason and Mike brought up the rear, walking side-by-side, discussing ways to keep an eye on all the kids that would be near the lake today. Neither wanted a tragedy to happen. Mike told his Dad how he and his crew had put up some temporary safety fencing around the area of the lake where the party was being held. They had also run it along the tree line and trails to stop anyone from wandering off. Jason nodded his head in approval.

I only left two areas open, this one leading down and where John’s bringing the rest of the family over on the trail from his house. Some of the guys from my crew offered to walk the perimeter to keep anyone from wandering off. Jessi, Aaron, Simone’ and Tom have all volunteered to hang out around the dock to keep little kids from walking out onto it. They will be able to keep an eye out for anyone trying to get over the fence, too.

Sounds like you have it all under control, son. Guess we better get over there and help with those balloons, Jason said, placing a hand on Mike’s shoulder.

Jason, Charles and Mike filled the balloons with helium, while Taylor and Sarah tied strings around them and added weights to keep them from floating away. When the caterers arrived, Sarah and Mike broke away to show them where to set-up. Leaving his Mom in charge, Mike double checked the tents, making sure they were still secure. He didn’t want anything to go wrong. Yesterday he had roped off the yard where he wanted people to park, posting signs with arrows. He had even rented porta potties and had them set up by the path leading down to the lake. Not too far away, but far enough to keep from interfering with the party in any way. The invitations they had sent out, had asked guests to join them for good food and a good time. Mike meant for that to happen. Today was for all of Charles’ many friends, to wish him well. Tomorrow, after church, would be just for family.

Mike checked his watch, it was a little after ten-thirty. The rest of the family would be meeting over at John’s place around noon. John and Kate’s kids would shuttle family members over on the Gators. That way it would free up more parking for their guests. Mike glanced around at the activity surrounding him and smiled. He watched his mom walk back, to help with the balloons. His two sons, thirteen year old Tom and eleven year old MJ, were skipping stones across the lake. Six year old Mary sat next to Taylor, watching her Mother’s every move. Mike’s expression softened as he watched Taylor lean to whisper into their daughter's ear and the little girl's face lit up with joy. Mary jumped up and ran to her brothers, talking excitedly. All three children ran back to their mother’s side. Taylor was allowing them to finish decorating, with the balloons. The children were having a blast as the adults tried to call out instructions on where the balloons should be placed.

Mike’s eyes shifted back to his wife, as she laughed at the kids ignoring any suggestion the adults made. She caught his gaze on her, smiling as she raised a hand to wave. He smiled back, signaling her to join him. As Mike kept his eyes on Taylor as she approached, he thought to himself, I was blessed to have found love twice in my lifetime. Once with Jessi, his best friend John’s sister, and again with Taylor. Jessi’s death had made him a stronger, more compassionate man, a better man. Taylor had needed his compassion and strength when she battled cancer and won. Yes, he was indeed a lucky man to have shared love with two extraordinary women.

Taylor kissed her husband, then turned back to continue watching their children. Mike’s arm slid around her waist, pulling her closer. Together they watched as his parents and Grandad laughed, still trying to call out instructions on how the kids should be decorating. Tom, MJ, and Mary ignored all their suggestions and kept doing it their own way, making their grandparents laugh harder.

Mike felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He knew, without a doubt, someone’s eyes were on him. He let go of Taylor, turning around slowly to look behind him. On the path leading up to the house, a lone figure stood. Mike held up a hand to shade his eyes as the person began to walk down the path, drawing closer. With the sun blinding him, Mike wasn’t able to see who was walking down the path. When the figure finally stepped into a patch of shade, making themselves visible to Mike, he dropped his hand to grip the edge of a table. His stomach dropped and his knees almost buckled from shock. Barely audible, he whispered, Kimmi.

Taylor’s head whipped around. Her husband's face had drained of all color as he stared transfixed at something or someone behind her. Had she heard him correctly? She turned completely around to see a woman approaching them. Oh my God, Taylor thought as she got a good look at the woman. She was older, but Taylor recognized her as the girl in the photos at Sarah and Jason’s house. Mike’s sister, after an absence of almost twenty years, had returned home. Taylor stood still as Kimmi stepped in front of Mike and stared up at her brother, waiting. Her heart went out to Mike’s sister, when she saw the uncertainty of her welcome, in Kimmi’s eyes.

Jesus Christ, Mike choked out as he grabbed his sister, pulling her into his embrace. What the hell Kimmi?

Taylor felt her own tears streaming down her face as she watched brother and sister reunite. Kimmi had buried her face against Mike’s chest as she hugged him tightly. Taylor heard Mike’s sister’s cry out, Oh Mike as Mike kissed the top of his sister’s head. Glancing back at Sarah, Jason and Charles, Taylor noticed they were completely unaware of Kimmi’s arrival. They were still engrossed in what their grandchildren were doing.

Mike let Kimmi push away, but kept a hold of her arm. He waited for her to wipe her tears away before saying, I can’t believe you’re standing in front of me. Are you for real? God Kimmi, what took you so long to come home?

We’ll discuss that later, after Grandad’s party. Can you agree to that?

Mike nodded. I can live with that.

Okay, good. First thing I need to tell you is, don’t call me Kimmi. I’m just plain Kim or Kimberly, whichever you prefer. Kimmi’s gone Mike and she’s not coming back, she said, using a resolute tone of voice. Do you understand?

I hope not all of her is gone. She was my sister after all and I loved her. Still do, he said softly, his eyes searching hers.

Kimberly nodded. Fair enough. Maybe if you’re nice to me, I’ll let her out once in a while. All I’m trying to say is, I’ve grown up and I’m no longer the teenage girl you remember, so don’t expect me to be that girl. She’s long gone and not coming back.

I’ll try. Kimmi ... I mean KIm, this is my wife, Taylor. Tay, this is my baby sister, Kim. Don’t call her Kimmi, she’ll bite your head off, Mike teased.

Knock it off Mike, Taylor scolded her husband, before meeting Kimberly’s gaze. It’s nice to finally meet you Kimberly. I’ve heard so much about you from Mike and Sarah. All of your family, actually.

Kimberly looked up at Taylor. It’s nice to meet you, too. By the way Mike, don’t start that baby sister shit either. You know I hate it. Mike just grinned. Turning back to Taylor Kim said, I’ve read a lot about you, all of you actually.

Mom’s letters? Kim nodded yes to Mike’s question. We weren’t sure you got them, since you never answered. Are they what finally brought you home? Mike asked.

Kimberly shook her head. No. Again, that’s something we’ll discuss later. Right now I just want to see the rest of my family.

Mike eyed her a moment before saying, Okay, I’ll drop it for now. He glanced over his shoulder, grinning. I think it best if you walk behind Taylor and I. Kimberly nodded her agreement as Mike winked saying, All right, let’s go have some fun.

Sarah looked up at Mike and Taylor first, but it was Charles that demanded, What’s got you two smiling like a couple of goons?

Goons? Mike chuckled. Hear that honey, Grandad just called us goons. And here we brought him the best birthday gift ever.

Well, we didn’t exactly bring this gift ...

No, don’t say it Tay. I’m laying claim to this gift. Damn it! Why in the hell did you pinch me? he asked, glaring over his shoulder.

Jason rolled his eyes, saying dryly, Whoever is standing behind you is a better person than I. Trust me son, I’d do more than just pinch you. Step away so we can see who’s come to wish your grandad a happy birthday.

Mike looked at Taylor, grinning. On the count of three. One, two, three. They both stepped to the side, revealing the surprise guest.

Oh my God, my baby! Sarah cried out, trying to stand. Her shock of seeing her daughter again made her knees weak and she began to collapse. Jason caught his wife before she fell, lowering her back into the chair.

Kimberly rushed forward, dropping to her knees in front of her mother. Don’t cry Mom. Please don’t cry, she said through her own tears.

Jason wrapped his arms around both mother and daughter, his head down as his shoulders shook. Charles rubbed his granddaughters back with one hand as the other tried to wipe the tears pouring from his own eyes. Taylor leaned into her husband as she watched the touching reunion in front of her. Tom, MJ and Mary came to stand by their parents, curious. Mike bent down to tell them who the woman was kneeling before their Grandmother. Both boys nodded, while Mary smiled with joy. Her grandma had told her  stories about her aunt many times.

When their tears finally subsided, Sarah called the children over to introduce them to their Aunt Kimmi. Mike quickly corrected her saying, Kimberly. Sarah squeezed her daughter’s hand, calling her Aunt Kimberly, instead. Looking into her daughter’s eyes, she understood instantly her teenage daughter Kimmi was gone. In her place was a grown woman and Sarah desperately wanted to know everything about her life. Would Kimberly give her that chance?

Kim pulled a chair up close to her parents and grandad. When they began bombarding her with questions, she took her mother’s hand in hers saying, I promise we’ll talk about me later. Right now, this is Grandad’s day and I’m here to celebrate it with him. He’s more important than me. Okay?

Jason was quick to assure her they would honor her request and wait to ask their questions until later, after the party. Sarah filled her in on what all they had planned for today and tomorrow. As she listened to her mom, Kimberly looked past her, at Mike and Taylor. Both had their phones out, texting furiously. Letting the troops know of her arrival, no doubt, she thought to herself. Giving all her attention back to her mom, Kimberly listened intently for awhile before glancing at her brother and sister-in-law again. She watched them exchange a worried look. Kim settled her eyes on her mother once more thinking, and so it begins. For better or worse the wheels had been set in motion. There would be no turning back this time. She had come too far to give up now. No way in hell would she let another one of her dreams unwind.

    Chapter 2

John pulled his phone out of his pocket, smiling at his wife, Kate, saying, Bet it’s Mike again. As he read the text, his smile faded. Turning his back on his family, he walked out of the house, to stand on the back deck. Kate followed him out the back door. She became even more concerned as she watched him shove his phone roughly back into his pocket, before leaning against the rail to stare unseeing out across the backyard. Hearing his wife’s approach, John turned his head slightly, his eyes downcast to avoid her direct gaze.

John, was it bad news? He shook his head. Honey you’re scaring me, Kate said, reaching out to lay a hand on his shoulder.

John lifted his gaze to stare out across the lawn, once more. It was Mike. He ... he had something to tell me, so I wouldn’t be blindsided.

    Blindsided?

Yeah, John turned to face his wife, his expression stoney and his eyes unreadable, to say, Kimmi’s come home.

    What!

John shrugged. All Mike’s text said was, ‘Kimmi just showed up. Just thought you should know in advance.’ Jesus Kate, I don’t know what I’m supposed to feel. Should I be happy for her family? Hell, all I feel is trepidation.

Kate’s arms slid around her husband’s waist as she laid her head on his shoulder. John wrapped his arms around Kate, pulling her closer. His mind was racing. Why had she come back? How would he react when he saw her again? He closed his eyes momentarily, remembering the summer he and Kimmi had dated. She had turned his head and he’d thought she was the one. But then one night as his sister laid in a hospital bed dying, Kimmi’s true self emerged. She had accused his sister of a horrible sin. A sin from John’s past, not from his sister, but from his father. He had lost himself and tried to harm Kimmi. Not really Kimmi, though. In his head he was trying to silence his own father, who had tried to molest him as a child. His sister Jessi, had protected him from their father and he’d tucked it away in the back of his mind. But Kimmi’s hate filled words had brought it all cashing back and he’d completely lost it that night long ago.

Kate gently shoved against his chest to gain her release, from his tight hold. Her hand came up to softly touch his cheek as her eyes held his. I know you, John. You are happy for her family. It’s okay if you’re feeling a bit apprehensive. Who wouldn't be in your shoes? She hurt you deeply, but it’s been twenty years, now. Don’t you think it’s time to put this to rest? I know you have always regretted that you never had the chance to apologize for what happened between the two of you the night Jessi passed away. Now’s your chance. John honey, it’s time to let it all go.

John pressed his forehead against hers, smiling lopsidedly. I don’t deserve you.

I know, she teased, smiling tremulously.

John choked on a laugh. Damn Kate, I love you. He kissed her upturned lips before saying, Sarah must be on cloud nine. Not just her, all of them. I’m happy for them. I really am."

I know you are honey. Just take a minute to breathe and it will all fall into place. Trust me.

I do Kate. Come on, we better get back inside before ...

John are you okay? I’ve been sick with worry. Do you know, yet? What should we do? I can’t believe she’s back! Sarah’s probably in shock. Good God, I just can’t believe it! Madison had arrived.

Pete, Madison’s husband, rolled his eyes as his gaze met John’s. I’ve had to listen to this ever since Taylor texted her. I’m about ready to gag her.

John chuckled, saying, Calm down Madison. It’s a good thing, not the end of the world. I’m fine by the way.

Are you sure honey? Madison asked with a doubtful look. She was very protective of John. John’s sister had been her dear friend and she’d promised Jessi she would watch over John.

I’ll admit it threw me at first, but I’m truly happy for Sarah, Jason, Charles and Mike. They’ve waited a long time for her to come back to them.

I wonder why she came back after all this time? Madison speculated, out loud, not really expecting anyone to answer.

I guess if she wants us to know, she’ll tell us. If not, oh well. John shrugged after his statement.

Madison shook her head, saying, Kate, you’re married to an idiot.

Alexander, Madison’s brother, and his wife Trina walked outside, just in time to hear them all laughing together. Placing a hand on Pete’s shoulder, Alexander said, Guess Kimmi’s homecoming hasn’t put a damper on the party mood.

Pete turned around to say dryly, I think we’re all good here, now that your sister has calmed down. Pete winked at Alexander when he saw Madison’s death glare aimed his way.

Trina decided to interrupt before Madison could blow a fuse. John, the kids are already shuttling over Alex and his family along with Katie and Rob. When they come back, they will take over Ella, Mason and Kyle’s family. So we have a few more minutes before we all go over.

John nodded. I’m thinking a few more minutes is a good thing. He held his hand up, when Madison opened her mouth to speak. Madison, I love you, but don’t start in on me with your bull crap. I’m fine. We all need to remember Sarah and the rest of the family will need us to be supportive, no matter the reason for Kimmi’s return. Do you all agree with me? They all murmured their agreement. All right, let’s go wait for the kids to come back and drive us over to Mike’s.

Kimberly curled her hands into fists, so no one would notice how bad she was shaking. This time, as she heard the Gators coming through the woods, she knew they would be bringing John. Could she do this? She didn’t have a choice. Her dreams depended on his reaction to her being home. When the Gators came to a stop, Kim stood up and began walking in their direction. Mike thought to stop her, but Taylor’s hand on his arm gave him pause.

Kate saw Kimberly coming towards them first and warned John. Kim watched as Kate shooed everyone away. Madison tried to resist, but Kate was insistent. Just as Kim was almost upon them, Kate kissed John’s cheek and whispered something in his ear, before turning to walk away.

Kate, please stay, Kim said softly. Kate stepped back to John’s side, taking his hand in hers. Kim looked out across the lake, trying to gather her thoughts.

    Kimmi ... John began.

Kim’s head whipped around and her eyes landed on him as his voice brought her focus back to the task at hand. I’m not Kimmi. She’s gone and I’m glad. Let me introduce myself, she said, holding out her hand to Kate. I’m Kimberly or Kim and I did your husband a grave disservice.

Kate felt the trembling of Kim’s hand as she accepted her handshake. She had no idea if she should comment on what had just been said or not. Kimberly released her hand as her gaze shifted back towards John. Kate felt great sympathy for Kim. She kept quiet as Kim began to talk to John.

I know this is too little too late John, but I am so sorry for what I said that night long ago. It was unforgivable. I would also like for you to know, I’m deeply sorry for the loss of your sister. This should have been expressed back then, but the shame and regret I felt back then was too great. You deserved so much better than me and I am truly glad that you found her. Kim smiled at Kate before turning back towards John. I’m not asking for your forgiveness, I know I don’t deserve forgiveness. That’s not why I’m here anyway. I’m here to make amends to this family you have all become. To tell the truth of who I was and who I’ve become, but not today. Today is for Grandad. The only reason I’ve told you this much is because you deserve an apology that couldn’t wait any longer. She gave Kate a slight nod before turning to leave.

John grabbed her arm, startling Kimberly. He instantly let go when he saw her eyes widen with fright as she gazed up at him. Damn it, I’m not going to hurt you! Shit Kim, I’m so sorry for what I did and said that night. I would have apologized way back when, but you never came home. Have you been afraid of me all these years? Is that why you never came home? She shook her head no. Don’t lie to me. Please, I need to hear the truth.

I know you do. You all do. I’m not afraid of you John, know that much. And it was never you that kept me from coming home. Never! I just wanted to apologize today. It couldn’t wait till later. Excuse me, I need to take a walk. She looked at Kate to say, Please tell them I’ll be back. I just need a few minutes alone, that's all.

Kate watched Kim walk away, thinking she’s not what I was expecting. She had heard the remorse in Kimberly’s voice and most importantly, she’d seen the despair and self-loathing in her eyes before she had excused herself. Good God John, she’s heartsick like I’ve never seen anyone before in my life. My God, what has happened to her in the last twenty years?

John watched Kimberly’s retreating back a moment longer, then let his gaze shift, to the rest of the family, smiling and laughing together. I don’t know Kate, but I’m positive we’re the only ones that got a glimpse of that side of her. Look at them Kate, they’re all smiles. We can’t tell them what we saw.

Kate’s eyes were on Sarah’s happy face. I agree. We’ll just say all’s good after the two of you talked and apologized to each other.

John nodded, feeling a deep sadness for Kim and the group of people he called family. He knew none of them, including Kate and himself, had suffered as much as Kim evidently had. Gripping his wife’s hand tightly,
