Tiffany lived on Hodge Road, in Princeton, New Jersey, in a historic home that has been owned by her family for over 100 years. Every day she looked out over her backyard, thinking to herself and frowning, Ahh! It is nice, but one day I want to become an explorer, traveling the world, going on amazing adventures through the Amazon jungle, historic places and vast deserts, in the middle of places people haven’t even discovered yet, and maybe even find hidden treasures.

So, as she looked out onto her backyard it sometimes made her sad. Still, she let her mind turn that backyard into something else. With her backyard treehouse and an over-active imagination, there was nothing Tiffany could not do.

Plus, it was the start of summer vacation. And that was enough to make anyone happy.

Tiffany had just turned 12 years old, but her wildly curious mind had long since outrun her age in its quest to seek out and explore new things. She had no brothers nor sisters to play with so, living in this grand house all by herself with just her father, often made her feel lonely.

"Tiffany, what’s wrong?" her father asked.

    "Nothing…Well, you know daddy, I always wanted…"

Before she could finish, Tiffany’s dad excitedly interrupted,

Tiffany, I have a surprise for your birthday! Do you want to see it?

    Sure!, Tiffany replied.

He reached behind him and pulled out of a box, a little black and brown Rottweiler puppy.

Oh, Daddy really? No way! Is she mine? Tiffany excitedly asks.

Absolutely, so long as you give her a name, her father said with a smile. Tiffany lovingly named her new puppy, Lady.

Even though she loved Lady, she was still very small so Tiffany spent most of her time reading, playing, or adventuring in her backyard. Tiffany’s father was a futuristic scientist who worked on Space X’s Mars exploration program. She loved spending countless hours learning from him, and she often went to him with questions or discoveries. Tiffany would sit and listen in awe as he’d explain the details of the world to her.

Dressed in a pink tee-shirt, rugged jeans, and a red baseball cap that has seen countless hours of backyard adventures, Tiffany stomped across the yard towards the tree house and climbed up the crooked rungs to the top. Carrying a broomstick in her hand—a broomstick she imagined to be the sword of King Arthur.

Once she is in the treehouse, Tiffany opens the window by pushing aside the old chunk of wood she uses to cover it. She looks down into the yard below and sees her friend Bryan. He lives a few houses away and, while he doesn’t share Tiffany’s passion for great adventures, he does have a pretty great imagination.

He is also always up for a game of Conquer the Castle.

Looking down at him, Tiffany puts on her best King Arthur voice and calls down to Bryan. No one may enter the castle of the princess. Be gone or my archers will open fire!

Bryan steps forward, strikes a regal pose and raises his sword—which, in real life, is just an old slab of wood that Tiffany found under the back porch.

"I am the Dark Knight," he replies.

"And I have come to claim the throne! Open the gates, princess, or my knights will break it down."

    Never! Tiffany bellows.

    "Have it your way, then."

Bryan says, really laying on the acting skills.

Archers prepare to fire on my command!

My archers will defeat yours any day! Tiffany yells back.

Wait for my signal… READY! AIM!

She then looks over to her archers: an old teddy bear, her American Beauty doll, and Ken and Barbie, neither of whom look as if they are ready to play the part of archers.

But that is okay. Tiffany’s imagination paints them with warrior face paint. They hold tightly bows and arrows with flaming tips. They are sneering, screaming, ready to do battle.

The backyard is quiet as the archers are ready to unleash their arrows. Bryan smiles at her and she smiles back. He is okay as far as boys go.

It is a shame her archers are about to destroy him.

    "Archers…fire!" Tiffany yells.

She turns back to the window, just as the word fire is uttered out of her mouth. In that same moment, Tiffany’s foot lands on her little brother’s fire truck.

Her first thought is: I’ve told him not to leave his toys up here!

Her second thought is: If I’m not careful, I’m going to fall over this dumb truck!

She has no time for a third thought. Tiffany is too busy scrambling for balance as the fire truck rolls her forward. Her right foot stays on top of the truck, as her left foot goes into the air, her arms waving like a bird trying to fly as she tries to keep from falling.

Tiffany skids across the tree house. When it finally hits a groove in the wood and stops moving, it stops so suddenly that it sends her flying.

She sails right through the open door of the tree house. Tiffany hits the side of the metal slide, that leads down from the tree house to the yard and lets out an OOF! as she bounces hard from it and continues sailing through the air.

Finally, a third thought comes to her: This is going to hurt.

Tiffany hits the ground hard on her right side. She can hear Bryan calling out her name. He drops his wooden sword and comes rushing over to her. But Tiffany barely sees him. Her eyes are filling with tears.

That’s when Tiffany starts to feel the pain rocketing through her right arm. The entire right side of her body is throbbing as the pain intensifies. She tries lifting her right arm to see what happens, but it hurts too much.

    Tiffany!

    Are you okay?

Shaking her head, Tiffany tries not to cry.

"My…my arm. It Huuuurts!" Tiffany says.

Okay, Bryan says, looking very worried for her. I’ll go get your Dad.

Bryan leaves her alone, dashing across the backyard and up onto the back porch. Tiffany watches him go through the back door, calling for her Dad.

Alone, Tiffany allows herself to cry. She is afraid to look at her arm. It feels like it had snapped right off. She never felt pain like this before.

Tiffany looks back up to the treehouse and thinks, Wow! I fell that far? Cool!

Through the pain, she manages a smile. If she had survived a fall like that surely, she’d make a great adventurer someday.

She had never seen her father move so fast. He comes out of the back door, leaps down the porch stairs like a superhero, and runs to her.

    Tiffany!

    What happened?

She fell from the top of the tree house and landed on her arm, Bryan yelled out.

Ok Tiffany, Daddy’s here. Be still sweetheart, I just want to look at your arm.

Tiffany, we need to get you to the hospital. I am just going to pick you up, so take a deep breath, this may hurt. On the count of three,

    One.

    Two.

    Three.

    Deep breath, here we go.

When her father picked Tiffany up, the pain in her arm intensified, she felt as if she was being shocked by electricity. For a moment, Tiffany passed out from the pain. She knew that she had been in the family car at some point and that her father has been speeding to the hospital, but a lot of it is was a blur.

She saw her father through the pain and smiled at him. He looked so nervous and scared. It was almost as if he thought he was the one with the broken arm.

Pulling the car up to the entrance of the emergency room, Tiffany started to come around.

    Where are we? Tiffany utters.

At the emergency room, sweetie. We are just going inside so that the doctor can take a look at your arm.

Tiffany, with the help of her daddy, gets out of the car. The pain is still there but feels a little better now that she is up and moving.

In the waiting room, Tiffany sat in a blue, hard plastic chair; it is cold to the touch, maybe because they keep the air conditioner on at subarctic levels in the hospital.

Tiffany wait here, I need to fill out some paperwork for the doctor to see us.

    Ok Daddy, Tiffany said.

Her father was finishing up paperwork with the emergency room nurse, whose desk sat behind a clear glass wall, with a round cut out circle in the center, allowing the nurse and Tiffany’s dad to speak with each other.

That’s sort of strange. Why do they talk through a glass hole to people? Tiffany thought.

A guess maybe…. they don’t want to get sick themselves. Tiffany continued pondering on while waiting to see the doctor. As the pain in her arm starts to throb even more, it makes Tiffany’s stomach feel sick,

    Jeez! what is that smell?

It smells of cleaning supplies like the one your grandma uses to clean the bathroom.

I feel like I am going to throw up all over this floor Tiffany muttered.

Cummon, Tiffany thinks, plus that would be pretty gross and you want to be a big girl RIGHT?

    I got this!

When her father finishes with the paperwork, he sits down beside her, and she rests her head on his arm, until a nurse comes into the waiting room and calls out her name.

    I know it hurts, Tiffany.

The nurse said it will only take a few minutes since there are not many people in the waiting area today.

She even said you’re lucky! exclaimed her dad.

    Lucky?

How is this lucky daddy? Tiffany jokingly asked.

Apparently, at night this place gets really busy her dad answers.

A nurse steps into the emergency room with a clipboard cradled to her chest and a pencil in the other.

    Tiffany? Tiffany Musk?

The doctor will see you now the nurse said in a loud voice, that echoed throughout the emergency room.

Tiffany and her Dad follow the nurse out of the waiting room and down a hall. She leads them into a small room with a tall bed, a few chairs, and all sorts of cool and interesting looking tools and instruments. Everything looks clean and smells weird…sort of like the science class at school.

As soon as Tiffany sat down on the end of the bed of the examination room, there was a knock at the door.

    Come i….,

Before Tiffany or her Dad could even finish, the door quickly opens, and a happy voice rang out like he was announcing it to the entire hospital.

    HYYDEEEEE!. HOOOOOO….!

A tall man with messy hair enters the room. Tiffany knows it is not a polite thought, but her first reaction seeing him is: "he looks sort of goofy and who says Hyde!..Ho! anyway?"

The doctor is wearing black wire framed glasses with thick lenses, dressed in a white doctor’s coat with a stethoscope hanging out of his monogrammed coat pocket and his pants are hiked way up on his stomach.

The moment he comes in, the doctor steps on one of his untied shoelaces. He totters forward, nearly catching himself on the edge of the counter in the room, and then trips on the other shoelace. He goes stumbling backwards and lands on his butt with a meaty THUD!!

Tiffany can’t stop herself from laughing. Still, she tries to be polite, letting go of her arm to cover her mouth with her hand.

The doctor quickly gets to his feet, doing his very best to act as if nothing has happened. He doesn’t even bother tying his shoelaces. He simply looks at the clipboard he is carrying and then to Tiffany.

    Hello, Tiffany, he says.

    My name is doctor Dorkhum.

I understand you’ve had quite a nasty accident?

Tiffany thinks, I cannot believe my doctor is named Dr. Dorkhum! The girls at school are definitely going to get a good laugh when I tell them.

Yeah. I fell out of my treehouse, Tiffany answers.

Well, let’s have a look! He gently takes her injured arm in both of his hands. He then uses his thumb to press down on a certain spot.

A flare of pain shoots through Tiffany’s arm.

    Hey, ouch!

Okay, so I take it that hurts?

    Yeah, it does!

Dr. Dorkhum nods. He gives her arm a closer look and frowns. As he studies her arm with care, Tiffany observes him. He has a face that almost makes him look like a cartoon character: big wide eyes behind his glasses, the messy hair and bushy eyebrows on a long face with a large chin. Something about the way he looks makes Tiffany feel comfortable with him. But she kept looking at his untied shoelaces. She wishes he would tie them before he falls again.

Despite Tiffany’s careful observations, it isn’t immediately clear, just by looking, that the goofball doctor is a determined doer of good. Dr. David Dorkhum, in his youth, had been a decorated Navy physician during the war, and
