About this ebook

Permanent Record by Edward Snowden: Conversation Starters

Permanent Record is an autobiography by Edward Snowden. It is about power, corruption, courage, and heroism that explains the reality behind the government’s ability to control everything using technology. The book was intentionally published and released on Constitution Day, September 17, 2019, by Metropolitan Books because of the event being mentioned in the book. Snowden revealed to the world how the government of the United States was invading the private lives of every person by collecting every single phone call, message, and email and how he used to work for them. His revelations sparked a controversy about the questionable security of each person’s privacy and surveillance. When the book was released, the United States filed a lawsuit for alleged violations of non-disclosure agreements with the CIA and the NSA against Snowden.
On October 6, 2019, the book ranked number two on the New York Times Hard Cover Nonfiction best-sellers and on the Combined Print & E-Book Nonfiction best-sellers’ list.

Snowden started his narration with an introduction to his patriotic military family. He talked about his father working in the coast guard and his mother as a clerk at the National Security Agency. His father was the one who introduced him to his home computer, which was still using a dial-up internet connection at the time. Snowden shared how he eventually had knowledge about computer programming and learned how to hack at a young age. He even notified the Los Alamos National Laboratory about their website’s gaping security hole. Snowden was thanked by a man from the laboratory and offered him a job once he turned eighteen. He dropped out of high school when he missed classes due to infectious mononucleosis but later passed his General Education Development exam. After the September 11 attacks, Snowden joined the United States army to show his support to his country. He was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia for his Special Forces training but was taken out of the service due to a training accident that broke his
