Chapter 1

"Six years, newbie. I’ve been in this backwater precinct for six years. And this shit might be my ticket out."

Sergeant Ash Penn continued to rant at the young technician sitting next to him as they waited for their commander to begin this special briefing. Nobody knew the details, but they were told that it involved a special assignment that could rapidly advance their careers.

A dozen other officers and corporals were in attendance. Some of them were doing crossword puzzles or reading the funny papers. Others were sipping coffee and chowing down on powdered donuts.

As loudly as was reasonable, Ash commented, I think you got a good chance, kid. These aren’t exactly Atkinson’s finest, if you know what I mean.

He smirked at the wide array of insults and jeers that his junior officers hurled back his way. He raised his hands and made a ‘come on’ gesture in the air with his fingers. That’s right, keep it coming, flatfoots. Flatfeet? Whatever.

The police tech stared at him, wide eyed. Ash gave the young man a gentle elbow to the ribs. Relax, kid. All in good fun.

"Atten-tion!"

Immediately, fourteen police men and women were on their feet. The briefing room went silent as Captain Green marched into the room. The graying C.O. absently smoothed down his perfectly trimmed mustache as he walked.
