Chapter 1

As a Splice, the only difference between being a guard and being a prisoner was which side of the bars you were trapped behind.

Vivian curled up under the thin green blanket provided to her by the great state of Alabama. The glorified broom closet that served as her ‘chambers’ wasn’t heated. Early winter mornings were the worst. The concrete walls of St. Clair Correctional Facility seemed to drain the warmth from her bones, like a hungry wraith sapping her very essence.

Luckily, she shared her prison-issue mattress with a dear friend. Danny wasn’t a big Dalmatian, but fortunately he was a warm one. The spotted canine-human hybrid served as a virtual furnace, and he didn’t seem to mind when she pressed her cold toes against his footpads, or tucked her frozen paws under his armpits. He didn’t even stir from his deep slumber. She savored these precious, peaceful moments. They didn’t come very often.

She sometimes wondered where she ended, and where Danny began. They were virtually identical, their spotted coats only deviating from one another by a stray splotch here and there. Neither of them broke five feet, nine inches. Both of the Splices had soft, femine voices, though a quick peek under the covers would reassure anyone of Dan’s male status.
