Isa Pearl Ritchie
Isa Pearl Ritchie is a Wellington-based writer. As a child, she loved creating imaginary worlds. She grew up in the Waikato as a Pākehā child in a bicultural family and Māori was her first written language. She has completed a PhD on food sovereignty in Aotearoa. Her second novel, Fishing for Māui, was selected as one of the top books of 2018 in the New Zealand Listener and was a finalist in the NZ Booklovers Award for Best Adult Fiction Book 2019. Awa and the Dreamrealm is her first book for young people.

I found one!
I swam through the air, racing as fast as I could across the purply sky towards the Priestess Tree. She stretched up majestically into the air, her trunk beautifully curled and twisted in shades of brown, dark red and gold.
I found one! I’m sure this time!
I said, swirling around the tree trunk a few times before landing with a thump onto the grass beside her.
Found what, Little one?
The Priestess Tree’s voice sounded in my head.
I found a sensitive – I’m sure of it!
I reached my hand towards the tree, illuminating her bark into apricot colours with my glow.
See…
I said, showing her the child I had just seen in the liminal space, so small and soft for a human.
This one is far too young to tell, the Priestess Tree said.
I slumped against her trunk and sighed.
but surely the young ones are the most sensitive,
I said.
In a way, the Priestess Tree replied, but not in the ways required to help us.
I sighed.
But I really want to find one!
Sensitives are very rare, little one, but be patient and perhaps you will find one in time.
Why do I always have to be patient!?
I thumped my palms against the soft, spongy grass.
Oh Veila, the Priestess Tree said, patience will serve you well, as a dreamcharmer… just as it does for most of us in the Dreamrealm… indeed, for most living creatures.
Yeah, yeah…
I plucked a small star-shaped flower from the grass and began picking petals, letting them drift into the air.
Why do I always have to be wrong…? I’m the worst dreamcharmer – always getting into trouble. Lecitia is always telling me that and she’s right; that’s why I need to prove myself. I need to do something really special.
