    The bookstore wasn’t on any map. Didn’t have any obvious signs or displays to proclaim it open for business. And, Cary was absolutely certain, had never been on this street in all the years she’d lived in Portland, Oregon.

    To be fair, she didn’t come to this part of town very often, but she was pretty sure she’d have known about the little independent bookstore if it had always been here because she loved bookstores. The fact that this one looked, from the outside, like it belonged in this exact spot and had been here for a century was even more interesting.

    The façade was simple painted wood, creamy white and clean despite the messy, rainy, muddy March weather. The door was oak and heavy looking, with a lovely brass handle. The name of
