Heal Your Broken Heart - Dorothee L. Davis

Introduction

Abroken heart has been without a doubt the most popular subject in many movies.

Numerous songs describe people falling in and out of love, and for many centuries books elaborate about the troubles caused by romance and love.

No other feeling has been so universally described as the pain you experience during a breakup.

Maybe it is because of this romanticizing of heartache that so little medical or scientific attention has been paid to the physical and psychological effects caused by a broken heart?

No-one tells you how you can effectively deal with the pain of a breakup and make it go away nor why you feel so bad in the first place.

Being heartbroken is still seen as some sort of weakness, and overcoming heartache is like conquering a battle, resulting in a scar you may proudly show.

But why do we experience this enormous depression when a relationship ends? Why can’t we look at it in a more objective and down to earth way? Our lives were not so bad before we met this significant person, although after the breakup it feels like life has become completely insignificant.

Another question that we should ask ourselves is: why do we let our hearts get broken more than once and experience the pain all over again?

The first cut might be the deepest, like Cat Stevens put it in his brilliant song, but the second and third cut can also sting like hell.

Writing this book has been a healing trip for me. It made me understand why my body reacts in such a radical way when a relationship ends. I also encountered many ways to reduce the impact of heartache and to prevent myself from getting hurt so badly again.

I hope that my findings will also be helpful to you or your friends.

Chapter 1: it’s all about hormones

When you are confronted with a breakup, the last thing you probably want to think about is the hormones that kick into action when you fall in love.

But believe me, understanding what is physically going on in your body when falling in love will give you a much better understanding of why you feel so bad when a relationship ends. It will also make you realize that these hormones are - in a large part - responsible for the depression you feel after a breakup. This also means that if you can get your body into hormonal balance again you will already feel a lot better.

Helen Fisher, an American anthropologist, and human behavior researcher studied the hormone systems that regulate the different stages of love. She did a lot of amazing research about the roots of love and why people behave in a particular way when in love.

One of her investigations included functional MRI images of the brain of people in love. By doing this she was one of the first people that used scientific evidence to explain the principles of love.

I will not go into scientific details about her research but will only give a general explanation of the different systems to make you understand what your body is going through when you are in love. After explaining the different stages of falling in love, we will look into more detail at what happens when this love is taken away
