Chapter 1

Gently the ground sloped away, and after several minutes walking Selyna discovered a moonlit dell a short distance from the stream.

And here I shall sleep a while. she sighed, then dropped her staff and pack beside a fallen tree, its once majestic trunk now rotting and festooned with trailing mosses and rings of pungent smelling toadstools. Soft music carried on the breeze, the sound of a lament and she knew the musician all too well. But for Selyna the attraction had faded just as the anguish had. Nicor was an experience from the past, and as was so common for her race, an experience, either good or bad would rarely be revisited. Always the Elvenymph would seek more, newer and rarer sensations, the obscure and the unusual. No, Nicor would never manage to draw her back to his pool… because he was already passing from her memories.

But there is one who lingers!

Nestled beside the rotting tree Selyna closer her eyes and pictured the small mole-like creature who had suddenly begun to feature more and more often in her thoughts. Sweet Ham and his wonderful tail, so insignificant when compared to her father's Elfish race, so plain to the eye when compared to the Nymphs of the Eastern Forests, yet still he had captured a small corner of her heart, and for any of Nymph kind, such an admission was practically unheard of.

Dawn's sweet chorus woke her from disturbing dreams, and opening her eyes Selyna saw that the grass and herbs that had served as her bed were crushed and torn almost as though she had fought with an invisible foe as she slumbered.

Music returned from close at hand, and Selyna stood to face the stream that bubbled and gurgled between mossy banks, and there she saw him, perched upon a water polished rock, his violin tucked securely under his chin as magical notes sprung from the bowstring.
