Introduction
ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL communication methods we use in day-to-day interactions is our non-verbal or body language. It's the communication mode that ignites our good-level
feelings and reactions. Research has shown that gaining an knowledge of body language improves one's capacity to be successful out of any scenario.
Have you ever watched a couple sitting together, feeling in minutes how bad or good their connection was? Have you ever wondered how you could conclude so rapidly without any close interaction? Whether you are conscious of it or we are not, we spend most of our days reacting to non-verbal signs projected through their body language and drawing conclusions from our observations.
Our body language shows the reality we conceal from the world, including how we feel about ourselves, our interactions, and our circumstances.
The individuals we communicate with can determine how masterful we are in any specified scenario, our intentions, the quality of our interactions, our level of trust, and what our real motivations and wishes are through our body position, eye contact, gestures, and facial expressions.
Body language's strength is discovered in its emotional reaction. Feelings drive choices in nearly every scenario. Non-verbal indications trigger feelings that determine an individual's core assets such as: trustworthiness, truthfulness, sincerity, ability, and leadership abilities.
The interpretation of these indications can determine the job we are hired for, who we date, what level of success we obtain, and who can be elected to influential political positions.
WHY DON'T WE SPEND years developing and learning effective body language skills?
The truth is that most people undervalue the importance of body language until they seek a deeper understanding of human behavior in a personal relationship or in a competitive business situation.
Body language mastery provides people with the secrets to interpret meanings behind body movement and specific gestures and to understand how to effectively project and communicate messages when dealing with others.
Overall efficacy in interpersonal relationships is thus significantly improved. The best way to start this mastery process is to know the fundamental understanding of the two key body linguistic types— open presence and closed presence.
The closed-presence type is featured in people who fold their body around the center line, running straight down from the top of the head to the feet.
The physical features that produce this sort of presence are arms held close to the body, feet positioned close to each other, fingers crossed on the body or held together in front of the body, tiny hand gestures kept close to the body, shoulders bent forward, and eyes concentrated below eye level.
The messages sent by the closed presence sort of body language to the world are powerlessness, lack of trust, low self-esteem, and absence of knowledge. In extreme instances, one can even generate an unseen message.
The impacts of this form of body language can vary from simply not getting the best possible possibilities to a worst-case scenario of harboring a self-fulfilling perspective of victimization.
By comparison, open presence is featured in people who generate a feeling of power, authority, and management by projecting mastery of trust, achievement, strength, and skill.
The physical features are feet held hip apart, open hand gestures used in discussion away from the elbows kept away from the body, body's center line, knees held back, straight positions, and eyes concentrated on their listeners ' eye level. These people are considered successful, attractive, smart, and readily appear to have succeeded. We see this body language sort as leaders ' body linguistic.
The key to projecting an open presence and improving body language is eye contact. Eye contact is one of our most significant communication instruments. Using eye contact during interaction with others can alter how individuals perceive them. When individuals start talking straight in a person's eyes, they are perceived as trustworthy, confident, and competent.
Facial expression and hand gestures and are the second level of change to be seen with open involvement. These communication methods enhance the capacity to communicate messages obviously and efficiently.
By skillfully using open hand gestures away from the body and expressive facial effect, greater impact is created when speaking by visually stimulating the listener and increasing the amount of information provided during interaction.
As kids, we are taught from an early age that good boys and girls sit together with feet and hands folded before them. The encouragement to restrict physical room as kids can generate some of the features observed in adulthood's closed presence body language.
To counter this effect, one can start adopting the qualities of the open body language presence and incorporate these manners into the natural state of being. Once this behavioral change is completed, it will provide the same messages and non-verbal impressions as their counterparts.
Body language mastery is essential to the most efficient presence in all interpersonal relationships. Individuals without this mastery are susceptible to misunderstanding and find it unsuccessful to communicate their thoughts. Ability to differentiate between different modes
Body language, anyone can attain the mastery needed to be effective whatever they choose.
This is a comprehensive guide to know how body language study works, the next time you go out take the time to observe those around you and see what you can decipher from their signs of body language.
Just make sure you're not too evident in observing others as this will make individuals uneasy around you and alter their indications of body language.
Chapter 1
What Is Body Language?
BODY LANGUAGE IS ANOTHER word provided every day to non-verbal communication. Eighty percent of our daily communication is regarded non-verbal. Body language research operates by studying our multiple body gestures, eye dilations, and even changing our voice pitch in certain situations.
Body language's basic premise is that our reptilian brain or body's limbic system or, which controls our most basic survival functions, including the fight-or-flight response, will naturally tell our bodies to perform certain gestures. Even babies seem to know intuitively how body language works and can communicate their needs through their small body gestures.
From an early age, babies learn how certain gestures elicit responses. Smiling and tilting one's head slightly often leads to increased attention. Even learning how to shake our head no
and yes
seems to come from our adolescence, where the yes
head nod permitted us to find our mother's breast to feed, and the no
head nod ends the feeding cycle.
When we're kids, body language signs are so apparent because we have not learnt how to conceal or minimize them. As a consequence, kids create great study examples of non-verbal communication ways.
Generally, children have little control over their responses to different circumstances, so when they're like or dislike something, they usually let you know. As a consequence, kids will see
