    Tajon - McKayla Schutt

    CREATION

Have you ever wondered how dragons came into existence? I bet not. To humans, werewolves didn’t exist until two decades ago. But dragons still reside in the supernatural closet.

Everything started when a coven of witches was continuously attacked by a pack of werewolves. They tried to fight on their own, but their numbers dwindled, and options were running out. A few strong witches took charge and hatched a plan. They captured eight human men and infused them with four elements producing a new species.

    Dragons.

The first four became alphas and the other four became the second in commands. They were a stronger species than the wolves with fire breath, skin like stone, and the ability to shift at will. Dragons used their strength to kick ass and stop the werewolf attacks.

What the witches didn’t know was they had accidentally created a side effect. The more a dragon shifted, the closer they became intertwined with the beast and the rage which fueled their animal sides.

If the dragons shifted too much, they began to destabilize.

One set of males made a pact not to find mates while the others bonded and started families. These males grew unstable, shifting without warning and destroying homes and parts of the forest. One alpha, Aroldo, was on the verge of rampaging through the city until a woman mated with him. His second in command, Edgardo, became unstable years later and only a mate calmed the beast inside.

The witches came up with a plan to help their creations, they didn’t want to end them because of their mistake. Half the coven gathered the dragons and split them into two groups, alphas and seconds. Since the alphas were closer to their beasts, they used their magic to postpone the destabilization until they reached sixty human years. The seconds were given eighty years to find their mate.

Shifting too much could bring on the side effect sooner than normal.

The other half of the coven created a backup, a spell to stop a crazed dragon if they started rampaging. They couldn’t have their creations destroying the world.

The next four generations found their mates and grew their clans while keeping the witches safe. But the werewolves stopped attacking and a two-decade discussion began about parting ways. If any future dragon lost their human side to their dragon, the witches would have the right to end them. So, they separated, and the beasts went out on their own, spreading their wings and planting roots all over the world.

Three known clans currently exist but the original bloodlines have blurred as dragons mated with humans or even the other elements. For some older dragons, the race is on to find their true mates and stop themselves from destabilizing.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Petra

One more day of heat, then I'll be done. Petra kept repeating the phrase as she walked toward Tajon's home. Mark him, her beast suggested, but she shook her head. No, he didn't seem to be ready, and marking him too soon would make both of them lose their damn shit.

She rolled her shoulders, kept her head high, and took deep breaths through her mouth, trying not to take in his erotic Cedar fire scent. Every piece of her soul craved Tajon, yet she couldn't have him until he accepted her.

A small knock on the wood, the sun beat down on her back, making her even warmer as it crept through the sky. Summer days meant the desert saw more sunlight than normal.

The door swung open with Tajon rubbing his right eye. His scruffy brown hair stood up on the left like he’d been sleeping. Petra, what are you doing here? He scratched his short brown hair.

Magnis was running late and wanted to get this to you. She extended her hand with an envelope of cash.

One day wouldn't kill me, or I could've picked it up. Tajon didn't meet her gaze as she extended her arm farther, her dragon wanted to jump into bed, but her human side knew he wasn’t ready. The longer she stood so close, the higher the chance she’d end up in his bed.

It's what the clan owes you for the last month of protection. She shook the envelope, making it open, sending a few hundred-dollar bills to the ground. Shit, sorry. She dropped to retrieve them, but he snatched them up quickly.

It's all good. He pulled the stack of cash from her hand and touched her fingertips. Desire raced up her spine, lighting her up like a freaking bonfire.

Tajon... Her voice came out breathless, years of giving him space made it difficult to focus. He met her gaze, his beast showed up, making his brown orbs change to blue. Her own eyes warmed as her dragon surged forward, wanting to be with Tajon. To be under his hot body, then on top of him, riding until they both released all the pent-up tension.

We can't mate. I'm not ready to be your mate. He shook his head. The blue faded back to brown orbs. Her dragon hated those words while her human side just wanted to give him more time.

I'm not asking for your mark, just your love. She rubbed her finger over his chest. Fire raced under her skin. She needed him so bad.

It's still not a good idea. He backed up, and she followed, not taking his pathetic hint to leave. His eyes changed to blue once more, spurring her on. She closed the door behind her as he continued to back toward his bedroom. Petra grinned and followed her prey.

I think one night with you can keep me going. She caught up with him as their feet hit the cream carpet in his bedroom. Quickly, she pulled off her shirt and tossed it to the floor. She rarely wore a bra and loathed the things during her heat. His eyes focused on her tits, making her grin. Every time he couldn't move his eyes away from her body to meet her gaze was an affirmation that he did want her, even if he said they couldn't be mates.

She popped the button on her jeans, and his gaze flicked back to the dragon before returning to human. Slowly, she pushed down her jeans. The normally soft fabric grated against her skin from being in heat. She loathed this time of year but was thankful it wasn't every month like the wolves. That would be too much temptation. Even now, being so close to Tajon and keeping her teeth to herself would be very difficult.

I promise on my parents’ graves that I won't mark you. She put her hand over her heart, letting the words sink in before shimmying out of her panties. His warm home didn't help the raging inferno inside her belly. She bit her lower lip,
