Beatitudes in the Bedroom - J. Parker

    Introduction

The longer I’m in marriage ministry, the more I’m convinced: Whatever God says about who we should be outside the bedroom is also true for who we should be inside the bedroom.

While we have specific verses about marriage and sexuality in the Bible, other passages highlight principles we should apply to the treatment of our spouse when it comes to sexual intimacy. We don’t leave our Christianity at the bedroom door.

So in this short book, we’ll look at a passage of Scripture found in Matthew 5 and echoed with minor variations in Luke 6. The Beatitudes are a collection of blessings Jesus Christ says we’ll receive when we choose certain attitudes. These attitudes may feel unnatural, but they demonstrate humility and commitment to God and His ways.

    Why the Beatitudes

The Beatitudes may seem an odd passage to relate to sexuality. What does being poor in spirit or meek or merciful have to do with our sex lives? And aren’t the Beatitudes really about spirituality?

Actually, our spirituality seeps into our physical lives. Consider Luke 6:45: A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Who we become inside impacts who we are on the outside.

Moreover, God wants us to love and honor him with our whole selves, including our physical bodies on earth. Jesus says the greatest command is to love God—which involves our hearts, our souls, our minds, and our strength (see Luke 10:27).

The Beatitudes specifically outline what attitudes and actions bring about God’s blessings. Once we embrace that knowledge, why wouldn’t we apply it to every area of our lives? Even the most sensitive and private.

Or perhaps especially the sensitive and private, since the bedroom is where we often feel our most vulnerable. Having a husband or wife who treats you with Christ-like care can settle your heart, encourage your spirit, and help you fully embrace God’s gift of sexual intimacy.

    Blessed Are

As you read this book, remember that each verse of the Beatitudes begins with the phrase Blessed are and then tells what kind of person is blessed and what they will receive. The word translated in English as blessed is the Greek word makarios. It is
