Kao trailed off halfway through the utterance, his eyes locked on Ropes’. The cougar purred and flicked her tail, though Fyr was the one who leaned forward, his elbows on his knees as he tried to drag his attention away from the game on TV. Ropes winced. She hated when he was so zoned into the flat screen that he could hardly pay attention to anything around him.

Fyr? She prodded him gently on the arm. Kao was talking to you, honey.

Her words were pointed, but she exchanged a look with Kao all the same, the dragon chuckling lightly as he rubbed the back of his neck.

Don’t worry about it, my brother’s always been like that. But, as I was saying, I’ve invited all my old college buddies to come round and bring friends, it’s going to be a big crowd there. You’re very welcome to come by and I’d love to have you.

The drake’s smirk was only for Ropes.

Hell, why don’t you both stay over? He suggested, as if the thought had only just occurred to him. You have the guest room, one of them anyway...

That caught Fyr’s attention, if not for the reason it should have done so.

One of the guest rooms? The drake smiled, suddenly handsome in his red scales and his house shirt. Just how many do you have now?

Ropes stared at him, Kao purring on about his new digs and how much more space he had – too much for just him, in all honesty. Her husband was handsome, she had to admit, in his red scales that looked almost too well-cared for, and the yellow tint across his ear-frills. The damn drake could make even that scrappy, old house shirt look good, the one that she kept trying to throw away and, somehow, seemed to make its way back into his chest of drawers all the same.
