    Chapter One

It had been three weeks of continuing to work for Men With Trucks. I was starting to feel much stronger, and the size of my muscles had visibly increased thanks to a regime of steroids, protein, and of course, the never-ending lifting of couches, heavy boxes, and God-knows-what-else. It had also been three weeks that I barely managed to talk with Alan.

After the morning move, I finally happened to find Alan in his office.

Can I come in? I asked.

Yeah, sure, he said. Close the door.

I did as commanded and sat down.

    So, what’s up? he asked.

Nothing, man. Just haven’t heard from you or seen ya in forever. How you been?

Not bad. Just busy, ya know? Working with Accounting and Payroll to get all the shit they need so this place can close up shop. It’s an administrative nightmare.

    Sucks, bro.

Alan inched his head towards me some more.

Damn, dude. You’re looking fit already! Roger still helping you out?

Yeah. But he showed me how to inject myself so I do it myself nowadays. It’s going good. Feeling good. It totally blows that this place is closing. I’m just starting to be able to hang with the veteran movers these days instead of slowing them down.

Good shit, man. Keep it up. Get a gym membership after this is all over. You’ll look killer when we finally meet with the gang leader.

I breathed a sigh of relief. Relief?

We’re still doing that then, right?

Yeah, dude, for sure. Like I said, I’ve just been busy trying to close this place down. I literally haven’t had a minute to figure out how we’re gonna pitch this auditor shit to him.

    Who is the leader, anyway?

    Honestly, I can’t tell you.

Why? He swear you to secrecy?

"No, dude. I haven’t ever met him."

    I raised an eyebrow.

    You haven’t?

    Nope.

Then how the hell are we gonna pitch this idea to him?

    Roger.

You’re gonna ask Roger to ask the leader of the Valley Lords to agree to a meeting with us so we can ask him if he’s in need of an internal auditor?

    Yep.

    Jesus.

If that is his name, I think he’d prefer it to be pronounced ‘Hey Zeus.’

    Funny. You think he’s Mexican?

No. Or yeah, I think so. I don’t know. Does it matter?

    No, I guess not.

    Chapter Two

Another month went by without talking much to Alan. I also hadn’t seen Roger around in a while. I continued to work almost every day. I was definitely bulkier than I’d ever been before. I also felt a lot more confident. I wasn’t sure if it was a side effect of the steroids or a side effect of finally looking fit. Regardless, I was enjoying this newfound self-assured mindset.

Of course, always in the back of my mind was the worry of what I was going to do in a month when the company finally closed for good. Since I hadn’t heard from Alan about the potential job offer that we were supposed to pitch, I had
