Secret Desires Part 3 - E.J. Adams
CHAPTER 1
Jessica Nichols
It’s over. We’re through. I don’t ever want to see you again.
. . . The words echo in my mind and reverberate through the pieces of my shattered heart. How could I have been such a fool? I allowed myself to fall for Dylan Grant. But I was nothing more than one of his sexual conquests.
I rounded the corner of Dylan's house. The sound of music and voices from the back patio floated in the air behind me. I still felt sick to my stomach. To add to that, my head was throbbing.
I reached the driveway. A valet approached me.
May I retrieve your car, Miss?
he asked cheerfully.
I was in no mood for cheerfulness, but it wasn't his fault. Besides, I didn't have a car for him to retrieve.
No. Thank you. I don't have a car,
I replied.
Would you like me to call you a taxi or car service?
the valet asked.
That won't be necessary,
I heard Logan Price's voice from behind me say.
I turned and Logan came up beside me.
I can give you a ride home,
Logan said to me.
The valet stepped away and back toward his stand. If he was disappointed on missing out on a tip, he didn't show it.
Oh, that's not necessary,
I replied. I can call a taxi. Besides, don't you need to stay at the party?
No. There is ample security.
Logan was direct. There was no emotion in his voice. Just the facts, ma'am.
I really don't want to trouble you,
I said.
It's no trouble. I . . . never mind. Really, it's no trouble at all. I don't live far from you. It's pretty much on my way home.
I thought for a moment about how Logan would know where I live. Then I remembered that he mentioned the background check they ran on me when I was hired to work at Grant Industries. Naturally, that would include my current address.
Well, if it's on your way home, I guess a ride would be all right.
It is,
Logan replied. Eagle Two transporting guest,
Logan said into the microphone in his sleeve.
He waited a moment. I assumed that someone was responding in his earpiece.
Roger. Copy that,
he replied. I'm over here,
he said as he motioned toward the end of the driveway in front of the garage.
I followed Logan toward one of the black SUVs that the security team drove. He opened the front passenger side door and I got in. Logan closed the door and walked around to the driver's side. He got in. We buckled up. Logan started the SUV and began down the driveway.
The inside of the SUV was quiet. Just a low hum of the engine. The noise from the party was outside and distant. I was thankful for the quiet. My headache was getting worse.
There's bottled water in the center console,
Logan said.
It was as if he anticipated that I needed water to take an aspirin. Or he was just being polite and offering me a water to drink.
Thank you,
I said.
I opened the center console and pulled out a bottle of water. It was some expensive spring water that I had never heard of before.
Do you want one as well?
No. Thank you,
Logan replied. He stared straight ahead as we descended down the driveway toward the main gate of the estate.
I took a bottle of aspirin out of my purse. I opened the bottle and took out two pills. I opened the water bottle, took one aspirin with a sip of water. I repeated with the second aspirin. They were extra strength, so I hoped they would kick-in soon. I had a drum section playing in my head.
I took a few more sips of water and then placed the bottle in an empty drink holder located between the two front seats. I flipped down the passenger sun visor to look in the mirror and inspect how bad I looked.
My eyes were puffy and red from crying. My mascara was a bit smudged, but not as badly as I thought. Nonetheless, I was a pitiful sight. I felt embarrassed.
I flipped
