J.A. Johnstone
Being the all-around assistant, typist, researcher, and fact checker to one of the most popular western authors of all time, J.A. Johnstone learned from the master, Uncle William W. Johnstone. He began tutoring J.A. at an early age. After-school hours were often spent retyping manuscripts or researching his massive American Western History library as well as the more modern wars and conflicts. J.A. worked hard—and learned. “Every day with Bill was an adventure story in itself. Bill taught me all he could about the art of storytelling. ‘Keep the historical facts accurate,’ he would say. ‘Remember the readers, and as your grandfather once told me, I am telling you now: be the best J.A. Johnstone you can be.’”

Johnstone country, a vast and rugged place where life hangs in the balance. In the first book of the Last Mountain Man series, audiences get introduced to Matt Cavanaugh. Matt is a young man whose father is just returning from war. His family is broke, so they head out to start fresh in the west. On the way, the Cavanaugh family experiences tragedy that sets Matt’s life on a new trajectory.
Matt meets with up Smoke Jensen who passes on his knowledge of learning to live on the wild frontier to Matt so he can make a way for himself. Matt may have gone into the mountains as a boy, but he comes out a man and with a new moniker, Matt Jensen. In the novel, readers will follow Matt’s experiences that bring both a chance to live or die.
Matt is a man now on a mission, vengeance to those who took what was his. He has a moral compass and doesn’t take life just because he can. He knows that with the ability to use a gun comes the responsibility to use it to protect life. In the novel, Matt is a young man who must bring the killers who stole from him to justice. The main villain sends out many dangerous men in the hopes that he never sees Matt.
When the two meet, the ending is quite fascinating. I have read other Johnstone novels with Matt Jensen as part of the story, so it was great to go back to Matt’s beginning and learn more about how he came to be a Jensen. Also, there is some romance in the book but mainly I would consider it an action adventure novel.
To date there are 11 books in the Matt Jensen series, which testifies to the enduring character in the Johnstone fictional world. I hope readers will read the series that begins with Matt Jensen: The Last Mountain Man followed by Deadly Trail, Purgatory, Savage Territory, Snake River Slaughter, Dakota Ambush, Massacre at Powder River, The Eyes of Texas, Torture Town, The Great Train Massacre and Die With the Outlaws.
Grab a copy, sit down and enjoy the wild west tales with Matt Jensen and a host of other familiar characters! Read Hard. Live Free.
