    CHAPTER 1:

    THE BEGINNING

Kano! Why you always looking for the easy way out of everything? If you don't change your ways, you ain't ever gonna amount to shit, just like yo' sorry-ass daddy. Now get out my damn face. And you betta have yo' ass back in this house befo' those street light come on. You hear me, boy?" said Debra, Kano's mother.

Yes, ma'am, Kano responded, knowing he wouldn't be because tonight was the big night. See, Kano and his team members—Ron B, Freeze, Mac Sean and Troy—had been peepin' out the neighborhood mom and pop store because the owners were known for selling large amounts of cocaine out the back of it. They'd been plottin' on it for a while now, and tonight's the night they planned to lick it for every grain of ‘caine up in it. Kano was completely convinced this was the night that would change his life forever. Only if he knew how right he was . . . .

As he came around the corner onto Vina Villa Street, he spotted his boy Mac Sean. What's up, my nigga? he said, greeting him.

Still mackin', Mac Sean responded. See, Mac Sean professes himself to be the flyest nigga to ever walk upright on ten toes.

Man, you ready to get paid tonight, my nigga? Kano asked.

My dude, I came out the womb ready to get paid, Mac Sean answered arrogantly.

Well, everything is set. When we get over to Freeze's house, I'll lay down the whole setup to everybody, ya dig? Kano stated, referring to the plot to hit the mom and pop store.

Yeah, I dig, said Mac Sean.

As the two set off on their journey to meet up at Freeze’s house, they continued to discuss the latest gossip: who's on top in the murder game, who’s jackin' who, and especially who the latest and greatest head doctors are.

When they turned onto Bedford Avenue, which is where Freeze stayed with his mother, Tish, who's also one of the hood's biggest crack addicts, they spotted her coming down the block. As she approached she yelled out, Kano, come here, baby.

What do you want, Tish? Kano asked irritably, since the only time she spoke to him is when she wanted something.

Hi boy, bring yo' lil fine ass over here; lookin' jus' like yo' daddy, she said.

This caused him and Mac Sean to laugh a little. It was no mystery that he didn’t even know who his daddy was; therefore, they knew she didn’t. Tish, what do you want, wit’ yo’ schemin’ ass? Kano asked.

Boy, give me a couple dollars so I can go to my doctor appointment. I’ll pay you back, she stated.

Considering she already owed just about everybody in the neighborhood money, he knew she was just running the same ol’ crack head drag she ran on everyone else. But, so he could get on his way, he dug in his pocket, pulled out a nice-size roll of money, then pulled out a couple bucks and handed them to her. Here, and I want my money back, too.

With her eyes on his stack of money, and counting on him being naive, Tish decided to press her luck with Kano.

Kano, let me talk to you for a minute, baby, she said as she pulled him to the side. Kano, baby, let me hold $20.00 until the first of the month, she pleaded with a look of desperation in her eyes.

Kano shook his head. Tish, I got somethin' to handle with this money, he said as he started to walk around her.

All of a sudden Tish took a step to block him from leaving and stated, Baby, I'll make it worth your while, as she put her hand in his pocket putting something inside.

Because Kano was caught off guard, he took a step back, dug in his pocket and pulled out the item, which were her balled-up panties. As he realized what they were, he immediately dropped them to the ground: You trippin'!

Tish, taking no heed to Kano's disgust, turned around, looked over her shoulder at him and began running her hands up and down her body. What do you think of all of this? she said, referring to her body shape. Slowly, she started to lift her skirt in a seductive manner as she backed up towards him.

As Kano started to turn and walk away, he stopped and said, I don’t know what you're thinking, but I'll tell you this; that skirt would look much better on a toothpick. Then he walked over to Mac Sean to expose Tish's actions.

    CHAPTER 2:

    THE MEETING

When Kano and Mac Sean walked into Freeze's backyard, they immediately smelled the potent aroma from the Purple Kush Freeze and Ron B were smoking.

Hey, nigga; break bread like Jesus said, Kano stated as he walked up to dap Freeze and Ron.

Nigga, fuck you! He also blesses a child that has his own; or somethin' like that, said Freeze as he dapped him back and passed him the blunt.

After puffing the blunt, Kano passed it to Mac Sean and said, Where's Troy?

He went to the store to get the drinks. He should be on his way back, said Ron B.

As they continued to wait on Troy and the drinks, Kano asked Freeze, Man, what's up with yo' mama?

Aw, my nigga, she done lost her damn mind ever since my dad went back to the pen. Last night she even got into a fight with my aunt Sheila.

Is that right? said Kano. What happened?

Man, when she was playing with the kids, she picked up the smallest baby and noticed she had a ring on her pinkie finger.  So when nobody was lookin', she put the baby's finger in her mouth and sucked the ring off it. Now, she would've gotten away with it if she hadn't almost choked. So when my uncle Willie did the Heimlich maneuver on her and the ring flew out her throat, all hell broke loose. They broke every piece of furniture in the house! When they got through fighting, there was horse hair all over the place. It looked like somebody blew up the international house of weave! he said as they all continued to laugh.

Suddenly Troy walked into the yard with the drinks. After greeting him, Kano got down to business about the lick.

"As y'all know, today is the 15th—a big night for the mom and pop store; since Social Security checks arrived today, a lot of the neighborhood dealers buy their product in bulk.

"Now, Troy, your uncle already has it set up for me to buy an ounce from mom and pop tonight. I have two pistols for us to use, we'll pick them up on our way to the meet-up spot.

Me and Troy's uncle Dave will go inside to do the robbery; Troy, you'll come with us, but you'll stay outside the back door and be our look-out. Mac Sean, you're gonna go inside the front of the store to shop and distract the wife. Freeze and Ron B, y'all stay and be the watch-out for us in the front of the store. Does everybody understand their position? he asked.

They all said  they understood, so until it was time to move, they decided to kick back, get high, and think about how they were ‘bout to get paid.

    CHAPTER 3:

    THE ROBBERY

They left Freeze's pad on their mission at 7:00. The mom and pop store closed at 9:00, and it was set for them to buy the ounce once they closed shop for the night. So that left them about 45 minutes to get everything ready.

The team members went their separate ways. Freeze and Ron B went to steal a G-ride, Kano and Mac Sean went to dig up the pistols, and Troy went to get his uncle to make sure he stayed at the pick-up spot. The plan was for everyone to meet in Troy's garage at 8:15.

As Kano and Mac Sean came into the alley that led to Troy's garage, Freeze and Ron B pulled up in a stolen minivan with tinted windows. Weed smoke was pouring out every opening in the van, and the music was up so loud it shook the ground and the nearby windows.

Man, it sounds like a goddamn concert up in there, Kano stated as he walked up to the van. But, damn, dog, we're going to pull a lick, not go to the club, he added sarcastically.

Man, I grabbed the best thing I could find in case we need to get somewhere real fast, Freeze said.

Well, the way y'all smokin' and got the music  poundin', I hope you mu'fuckas can focus or we ain't  finna get nowhere fast but jail, Kano said.

Man, we got this under control. You jus' make sure you’re ready, Freeze said as he exhaled smoke from his nostrils.

Nigga, I stay ready. Now, let's get this shit crackin'. Troy, are you and Dave ready? Kano asked.

Hell, yeah, youngsta. Let's make it happen, cap'in, said Dave, Troy's dope fiend uncle.

They all jumped into the minivan and Freeze pulled off.

At 8:30 they pulled up in front of the mom and pop store, where there was a small circle of dice shooters in the middle of a game. As they all bailed out of the van, a couple of the fellas from the game looked up to see who was pulling up on them. Once they recognized who it was, they went back to their dice game.

As Kano and the rest of his team approached the circle he said, What's up wit' it, homies? What that MOBB like? The crew engrossed in the game was known as the infamous MURDA MOBB—they were notorious for killin' shit up!

It's all Gucci, my nigga, said Capone, the leader of the MOBB. What y'all 'bout to get into, young Kano?

Well, that's what I need to holla 'bout, family.

'Ey, Jew, hold the spot down, my boy, Capone said to his next in command—Jew Jacka.

A’ight, my boy, Jew Jacka replied.

After excusing himself from the rest of the MOBB, Capone said, What's up, fam?

Kano ran Capone down on what was about to happen, and out of respect, let him know it would be wise to get up outta dodge. Capone respected Kano's gangsta, so he moved his crew the fuck up outta there.

After Kano returned back to his team he told Freeze and Ron B to wait in the van. He reached into the bag, grabbed the .45 auto and handed it to Troy. Then he pulled out a chrome Desert Eagle, jacked a bullet into the chamber and said to dope-fiend Dave, Let's roll.

Pointing at Mac Sean he said, "Mac, I want you to wait until you see us go into the back door, then you come around the front and go inside like you're shopping.

Freeze and Ron B; remember, y’all are stayin' outside in the G-ride, and at the sign of any trouble or danger, you're to honk the horn two times to alert Mac Sean. Now, does everybody understand what they're to do? Kano asked.

Yeah, we good, they all confirmed.

Kano, Dave and Troy headed for the back of the store. Troy, you wait on the side of the dumpster until we're inside. After we're inside, then you come and post by the back door, Kano said. "By no means is anyone to make it to the door once we’re inside. If anything happens out here, and you can’t get to me, just start shooting and I’ll come out blazin’. You got that?

I got you, my nigga. Let's get paid, Troy said eagerly as the two embraced.

At this time Dave knocked on the back door. Who is it? yelled out a deep voice. Dave gave him the code word that was used to gain entrance, and once the old man opened the door, Dave introduced him to Kano. After the introduction, Dave and Kano were told to follow him into the back room, and as they entered the back room Kano heard the bell from the front of the store ring and the lady greet her customer.

Kano and Dave patiently waited as the old man reached into the hiding spot under the cabinet and pulled out a black duffle bag filled with several bricks of dope, a hydraulic scale, and three thick bundles money. At the sight of so much money and dope, dope fiend Dave became fidgety.

After reaching inside the bag and pulling out a large bag of powder and rocked ounces of cocaine, he put the duffle bag back under the cabinet and said to Kano: I charge $650 for an ounce of powder, $750 for an ounce that's already rocked up. Now, whether you want it soft or hard, if you get more than one ounce, I'll give 'em to you for $600 each. With that said, how do you want it, hard or soft?

Kano came out his jacket with the Desert Eagle and said, I always take mine the hard way, OG. So unass the drugs and the cash.

    $$$$$

Meanwhile, outside in the G-ride, Freeze and Ron B saw a police car pull up behind them and start to run the license plate of the van because it looked like the van that had just come up on the B.O.L.O. (Be on the lookout) auto-theft hot sheet. When the plates came back a match, the police officer turned on the lamps of his overhead cruiser.

    $$$$$

Inside the store Mac Sean noticed the police car behind the G-ride and to Kano and Dave said, One time! Let’s roll, y’all! then slowly walked out the door and took off into the night.

Suddenly a second cruiser pulled up with its sirens blaring.

Once Dave and Kano were alerted to the action going on out front, Dave broke into a run for the back door leaving Kano inside.

Kano reached to grab the duffle bag from under the cabinet and heard a loud scream as the lady walked into the room and saw the robbery in progress. When he turned to find the source of the noise, the old man reached under the table and pulled out a shotgun.

Drop the gun or I’ma send ya ta hell first class, son, the old man said to Kano. Kano did as he was told and dropped his gun, seeing his chances of getting rich disappear before his very eyes.

Pearl, put the dope and money up while I take care of him, the old man said to the lady.

    $$$$$

In the G-ride, Freeze and Ron B were contemplating their next move when the second cruiser pulled up. Then they heard the scream from inside the store. Realizing the time for rational thinking was out the window, Freeze threw the minivan into gear and took off at a high rate of speed and the first cruiser took off after them. As the second cruiser called in for assistance, he noticed the store owner was walking a teenager to the front of the store, while pointing a shotgun at his back.

He tried to rob my store, the old man said.

Officer Cash cuffed Kano, frisked him, read him his Miranda rights and put him in the back of the police car.

The other officer radioed in that the occupants of the stolen minivan bailed out and got away on foot. However, officer Cash radioed back that he had one of their friends in custody, and not to worry about the other guys because they'd be able to get this one to tell them who was with him.

    CHAPTER 4:

    STAYING SOLID

As Kano was escorted to the police station he thought about how everything had just fallen apart right before his very eyes. He couldn't get out of his mind how dope fiend Dave just took off and left him like he did. He also couldn't help but wonder what had happened to Troy. He could accept the dope fiend's cowardly actions, but not a member of his own team. One thing for sure, Troy would pay, and pay with blood!

Kano entered the police station and was escorted to a small room with mirrored walls, a table that was bolted to the floor, and small, uncomfortable chairs.

After sitting in the room for what felt like hours, officer Cash and his partner came into the room and each pulled a chair up to the table on the opposite side of Kano's.

Finally, officer Cash stated, I’m officer Cash, and this is my partner officer White. We need to ask you a couple questions, son.

    First off, officer Whitey—

No, I'm officer Cash, Cash said, cutting him off and correcting him. And my partner here is officer White, not Whitey, son, he added, raising his voice slightly.

Well, my name isn't son, either. It's mister Newton. Respect that, pig! Kano said, refusing to show any weakness or fear.

Well, well, well, it seems we've got ourselves a smart ass, stated officer White. Mister Newton, it seems your boys left you holding the bag.

I ain't got no boys, Kano responded, And if I did, they ain't here, I am. So before you even waste your breath, don't ask me nothin' about nobody else, he added quickly.

Oh, so you're gonna take the heat after your boys left you hangin' like they did? officer Cash asked.

I told you, I ain't got any boys. I roll solo bolo. So, if y'all are done with the questions, y'all can run me down to juvenile hall 'cause I ain't got shit else to say, Kano stated.

Suddenly officer Cash tried a different approach. Officer White, why don't you go get yourself a cup of coffee, he said to his partner, giving him a slight wink before turning back to Kano.

Once officer White left, officer Cash said, Look, I know my partner has a tendency to be an asshole. So, it's just me and you. And I want to help you, but you're going to have to help me help you. I need to know who all was with you, son; names and addresses. And I promise I'll get you off with some simple probation for cooperating with us. Now, there isn't a big rush. I'm gonna go grab a cup of coffee, and I'll leave you with this pen and paper; when you're ready, write out all the information you can think of, and I'll see about you being sent home. Deal?

    Deal, Kano responded.

As officer Cash got up to leave, he managed a slight smirk as he passed the two-way mirror. He felt as if he'd accomplished his goal of turning Kano into a snitch. Once he was out the door, Kano glanced at the two-way mirror also, and smirked as he began writing on the tablet. When he was done, he put the pen on the table and sat quietly.

Ten minutes later officers Cash and White returned with a look of triumph on their faces. As they entered the room officer Cash stated, You should be out of here in no time, depending on how much  you're willing to cooperate, son. Then he picked up the tablet and read what Kano had written:

Fuck you! And feed yourself the same greasy dick you’re trying to fuck me with. I ain’t yo’ son, and I ain’t no snitch, PIG!! I ain’t got shit to say but GET ME A LAWYER!! Oh, yeah, PS: Y’all good cop, bad cop routine was hella weak. Step ya game up, BITCHES!!

Officer Cash slammed the tablet down onto the table. As he cuffed Kano back up he stated coldly, I hope when you get to prison you end up somebody's prison bitch, son.

You can say all you want and hope all you want, but I'll tell you one thing; I'd rather breath my last breath than live knowing I snitched and took the bitch way out of the same game I profess to be a gangsta in, Kano stated as he was roughly escorted out of the police station.

    CHAPTER 5:

    PRISON LIFE

Kano was sentenced to 8-to-25 years in state prison and sent to Dayton Correctional Institute, also known as 'Gladiator School'; a place where you man up, or become a victim.

When Kano arrived at D.C.I. he was prepared to make an example out of the first nigga to push up on him or disrespect him in any way. Luckily, however, he didn't have to, because while being processed through Receiving he ran across one of his big homies who worked there. His big homie ran him down on who all from the hood was there in D.C.I., as well as the dos and don'ts; the code of the convicts. After pulling a few strings, he'd gotten Kano assigned to move in with one of the OGs from the hood so he could mentor Kano and help him stay out of trouble.

Once Kano got to his housing block he was greeted by several of his OGs who he hadn't seen in years.

Well, well, well, if it isn't lil bad-ass Kano, said Willie D. Willie D is one of Westwood's original hood legends, and he used to let Kano run errands for him when Kano was just
