The book was good and intense at times. At times it was hard to keep up with the number of people appearing. Overall it's good read and would highly recommend it.

POSITION OF POWER

CHAPTER ONE

On November 22, 1996, as Chunky waited for his cell door to open, his mind spun with excitement. He would be paroling today. And not just from any prison, but from Pelican Bay's D-yard SHU; the maximum security prison that houses the most-powerful members of California's prison gangs, including that of La Eme  ̶ The Mexican Mafia.

Chunky's cellmate, Mike Lerma, a Pomona 12th Street gang member who was now a member of the notorious Mexican Mafia, was sending Chunky out with a mission: to run the Inland Empire and Pomona Mexican Street gangs under his  ̶  Lerma's  ̶  control, by way of collecting taxes from the various varrios and drug dealers, that were to then be kicked up to Lerma himself. Lerma had given Chunky very detailed orders on what he was to do, and was sending him out with kites (handwritten notes) verifying his authority. If Chunky was successful in his mission, as well as took care of a few other, specific requests Lerma'd asked of him, Lerma had promised Chunky he and his brothers would make him; he'd be an official made member of The Mexican Mafia. Finally; Chunky was being given an opportunity to prove himself to La Eme the gang he idolized with his entire heart, mind and soul. He was 23.

CHAPTER TWO

Ibarra, 204, C pod; you're paroling, be ready, said the officer. Chunky turned around and shook his celly's hand.

All right, now, ese. You know the plan, said Mike. You handle the things I asked you to, and me and the brothers here will make you.

Simon, big homie. I'm on it. You'll be hearing from me, Mike; I won't let you down.

The cell door opened and Chunky began walking towards the pod door. Sleepy, Stranger, Prieto, Huero Sherman; I'm gone, gracias por todo. I'll be in touch, he said to his homies  ̶  fellow members and associates of La Eme who were doing time in the same 8-cell section.

All right, Chunks; be cool, they all said. When Chunky reached the pod door he was shackled, then escorted to R&R (Receiving and Release).

During the walk to R&R the officers escorting Chunky asked him if they'd be seeing him again. He stated no, an answer that caused them to laugh. They knew he was on his way to the Streets to work on behalf of the Eme. It was custom for most Sureños that paroled from Pelican Bay  ̶  the prison most prisoners and guards alike identify as headquarters.

Once in R&R he was put into a holding tank, dressed out, and given a copy of his parole conditions.

We're taking you to the Greyhound station in Eureka, said the officer. "Your money will be given to you then; $200.00 cash, and an institutional check for $2,862  ̶  the amount in your personal account. We'll be out of here by 7:30 this morning. Any questions?"

How long will it take for me to get to Southern California?

I'm not exactly sure, but it's probably safe to say you’ll arrive sometime late tonight.

Thank you, sir.

Go ahead and step back into the holding cell until we’re ready to leave.

Chunky stepped back in and they closed the door behind him. He was so close to freedom now; he couldn't wait to see his sons and hold them, and see his younger brother who was fresh out of Y.T.S . ̶  the Youth Authority in Chino, California. It had been years since he'd seen him last. And for what he had in mind in regards to his plans with Mike, his brother had gotten out just in time.

Chunky wasn't close to most members of his family; the main exception being his father, who he loved with his entire being. His father was his best friend and taught him the values of life; Chunky always felt guilty for feeling as if he'd let his father down because of the path he chose.

Many things began going through Chunky's mind while he waited; one of them being the mother of his sons, who'd left him while he was in prison. Being that she was the only girl he'd ever loved, he wondered if they'd get back together now that he'd be free again. Also going through his mind was the death of Julio Pavon; his younger homie who he'd loved like a brother. Now that he was in a position of power, he'd avenge Julio's murder by pushing for the two responsible to be whacked.

His thoughts were interrupted by the cell door being opened. Ibarra, you ready to roll? asked the officer.

Yes sir.

Let's go then.

Chunky and two C.O.s headed out the R&R door to the transportation van. Once they reached the van, they got in and drove to the front gate of the institution where Chunky had to be checked out by the officer keeping post.

One paroling, said the transportation officer as he gave the posting officer some papers.

The officer manning the gate walked around to the sliding door of the van and opened it: Ibarra; state your full name and CDC number.

Armando Ibarra, H-66670.

Thank you, sir. The officer then closed the van door and walked around to the driver's side window and handed the driver of the van back the paperwork. The gate opened and they drove off.

Chunky enjoyed the view as they drove to the Greyhound station. In regards to truly making it to the free world, it gave him a feeling of assurance; that it was real, and not a dream.

His thoughts drifted towards the mission he had to complete. He would do everything that had been asked of him. First, while he waited for Stranger to parole from the same place he'd just left, he'd get all the neighborhood gang and drug dealers on track as far as the taxes and things. Then, as soon as Stranger got out, he'd work on setting up the Chapo hit. See, Chapo from Redlands, along with Ted Sleepy Rios from Colton and Angel Vigil from Verdugo were at one point told they were made members of the mafia by Ruben Tupi Hernandez from Ontario. But, what they didn't know was that Tupi had been deemed no good by some of his fellow Mafia members and was going to be hit soon. With that, their memberships were not valid. They were ordered several times by the brothers in The Bay to stop claiming membership, but while Sleepy and Angel obeyed the orders, Chapo ignored them; he was still claiming membership and reaping the benefits that come with it. Because of this, Stranger was to kill Chapo, and Chunky was to assist him by setting up a meeting with Chapo so Stranger could make the hit. And since Stranger was to parole just a few weeks after Chunky, Chunky had just enough time to get everything in place.

CHAPTER THREE

They pulled up to the Greyhound station and Chunky began to feel overwhelmed. Sure, he was happy to be free, but he wasn't used to the fast movement or being surrounded by so many people.

He jumped out the van and went into the station with the C.O. alongside of him. He bought a ticket to the city of San Bernardino, then they walked back to the van. The bus showed up about thirty minutes later; he got on it and the van drove away. Free at last.

After the bus driver took a fifteen minute break, they were off to Southern California. Chunky settled in the back of the bus by himself so he'd have some quiet time to think. It wasn't long, however, before he fell completely asleep.

By the time he awoke, the bus was parked. So he got off, went into
