Acknowledgement
Writing this book has been a process that has taken several years. My help has literally come from the Lord and for that, I thank Him. Through the years, I have been blessed by an amazing number of family members and friends who have prodded, coached, and pushed me to complete it. I humbly acknowledge all of you and thank you for your love.
To my husband Thomas, thank you for loving me unconditionally and believing in me and my dreams even when I did not. Your vision and ability to see me, in me, and for me is a gift that I am forever grateful to have. I thank God for bringing us to together and in the words of our wedding song, God blessed the broken road that led me straight to you.
I want to express my deep love, affection, and gratitude for my children, Trey, Tevaughnt, and Tamar. You are the joys of my life.
I want to humbly thank my parents, Norman and Janice for always believing in me and my dreams. For creating opportunity and space for me to try, fail, and try again. For living a life of faith and encouraging me to never give up.
To my grandmother Johnnie Lee, the wisest and most generous woman I know, I pay homage to you and the life you graciously live. For my family members and friends, thank you for friendship, prayers, resources and blessings: Vince, Grace, Ilona, Richelle, Tiliea, Mary, DayDay, Elsie, Ms. Yvonne, Toni, Angie, Tracie, Dianne, Theresa, Andrea, Monica, Joyce, Uva, Kelli, Evie, Rachel, Roslyn, Mommy T, Tom W., Nicole, and my UD crew.
To Tyora Moody and the Tymm Publishing Team, thank you for existing and for all of your help making this dream become a reality

DAY 1
He Knows
How many times have you asked the Lord to send a father for your child? I have asked on numerous occasions. I think it is only normal for us to have such desires for our children. One day I read an article stating we should let our children know that God is their heavenly Father. The article concluded with a prayer from a little child who asked his heavenly Father for a daddy with skin on.
Laughter and sorrow filled my heart.
Have there been nights where you felt as though you have done all you can for your child and still it is not enough? You think maybe...just maybe, if a man were around your child would not be so passive, indifferent or angry.
The nights are dark, quiet and, at times, lonely. Sometimes tears seem to be our only companion. But God continues to be faithful. As you read the next section, you will see He is always right there.
My son Trey was eight years old when we faced the following heart wrenching experience.
Spring 1999
Trey had never met his biological father. Although there was no contact with him, Trey and I continued to pray for him. But last year, I was faced with addressing the issue of being fatherless on a more serious level with Trey.
One day, Trey’s teacher shared with me that he told the other first graders his father died. Since we all knew this was not true, the issue of lying had to be addressed. More importantly, I also needed to be sensitive to why he lied.
My heart already knew the answer to the unspoken questions. As a mother abandoned by her child’s father, I knew why. As a daughter who never really knew her own father, I knew why. He lied because he was embarrassed. He lied because he felt rejected. He lied because his soul needed healing.
As Trey and I sat in the car discussing the situation, he
