    Introduction

    The coyote is sometimes known as the brush wolf. Coyotes breed in late January and early February. The gestation period is usually sixty-three days. An average of 5 to 7 pups are born in April or early May. Coyotes breed only once a year.

    The losses from the destruction of livestock by coyotes in the western United States amounts to millions of dollars annually and seems to be increasing rather than decreasing. To add to that, coyotes have been migrating to the east for a while. Coyotes are becoming more abundant in the southeastern United States. Coyotes are non-native, invasive animals in the southeast. They have migrated from the western states at an alarming rate. In many areas, coyotes have been or have become a major nuisance. Coyotes damage or destroy local bird populations-especially birds that roost and nest on the ground. The fact is coyotes have reduced the fawn survival rates in many southeastern states and turkey
