Open any trapping supply catalog or get on any website and you will be overwhelmed with the sizes and styles of traps available for raccoon trapping. This can be an intimidating purchase for new trappers.
Over the years, dog-proof traps have taken raccoon trapping by storm. They are quick to set, and you do not have to worry too much about catching a nontarget animal. That is fine, but as a 'coon trapper you are limiting yourself by using only dog-proof traps.
You are missing out on some great opportunities. As a raccoon trapper that uses my fair share of dog proofs, I still run plenty of traditional footholds, body-grip and cage traps; the raccoon traps that are all but forgotten by many trappers today.
What I mean by missing out on some great opportunities is that you will likely only catch raccoons and opossums in dog proofs. My first mink many years ago was caught in a pocket set made for 'coons using a Duke 1½ foothold trap. My first weasel, all but unheard of
