Evangeline A Christmas Romance - Angela Gray
Chapter 1
Ten years, ten long years since I last went home. The scream from my mother on my voice mail made sure I knew how long it had been. A headache I didn’t need, I shut off my phone. The present situation was bad enough.
My career was in the toilet which had me sick. A misunderstanding, yes. Yet, one gossip could destroy it all. The tale might put an end to everything I worked so hard to get. About to throw my phone on the floor as hard as I could, a rap on the door froze my hand. With a groan, I stifled the urge and answered instead.
Take a break, Evangeline.
Tim, my associate and advisor pushed past the barrier and entered without waiting for an invitation.
That’s the worst advice I’ve ever received, I need to clean this mess up
Look at this objectively, Eva. Disappear. The best thing you can do is get away from here for a while. It’s the holidays, no one will consider your leaving unusual.
So, I’m to let everyone go on believing I slept with Sara’s husband?
Chris, Sara’s husband’s name is Chris. He’s the man I’d worked together with for months. We worked hard to get the firm’s brand out. While I toiled to make a name for myself, I was oblivious to certain things. I didn’t realize he was a sleazeball. How was I to know he took sex in exchange for services? Being a woman in a man’s world often made me ill.
However, here I was. Although, for me it took work. But that was neither here nor there since my effort was about to spiral down the drain. As a lawyer, I should have an argument for this case. One which would set me free. The outrage throbbing through me erased all rational thought, I had nothing.
I never go home for the holidays that would make this all wrong.
Smoke should be pouring out of my ears at this point. How else can people keep from blowing up from this level of anger?
You need to pay attention, Eva, no one has heard anything yet. We’ve contained the rumour for now. Hell, I suspect Chris doesn’t know about the tale. Go, get out of here and visit your family.
Did he think I would go? Did he suspect the only reason I haven’t gone back wasn’t because I had to work endless hours to climb the ladder? The job didn’t keep me away. It was him. I couldn’t go back and see him.
By now he had probably married her. I
