Introduction
Patrick…When I First Met Hans
Iwas on my way to China for the second time in my life, but this time to finish my MBA program with California State University, Fresno. Eighteen hours of flight time, movies, and sitting down is incredibly uncomfortable for me. So I decided to walk the huge 747, connecting with some of my classmates.
During this trip I first met Hans Finzel, sitting by one of my classmates William Henson. Hans was not too excited that I was reaching over him and standing by his aisle seat blabbering to William. I then took the initiative to introduce myself to Hans and apologize for being so rude invading his personal space. Author Dr. Hans Finzel, I found out, was on his way to lecture on leadership in Beijing and that’s when it all started.
From the quick exchange of business cards and emails to follow, I had a sense of urgency to explore this new acquaintance. Four books later I was a dedicated fan of his writing. I felt that he understood exactly what I was going through as a Millennial trying to make it in an industry dominated by Boomers.
Conversations between us were stimulating, as we discussed Baby Boomers, Millennials, and the on-going challenge of generational gaps in the business world today. We quickly hit it off, engaging in both of our passions for leadership and business. This was just the beginning of our connection.
Who is Patrick?
Patrick Kelly is a successful entrepreneur, speaker and strategist in the produce supply chain industry in California. For more than 15 years Patrick has been dedicated to growing better supply chains for produce partners around the world. He was awarded the Produce Business Journal’s class of 2015’s, Young and Smart Leaders on the rise and Top 40 under 40. Patrick is a young entrepreneur committed to making better deals for growers. He has dedicated his work to learning and leading all generations to work and thrive together. Patrick and his wife, Renae have two children and live in central California. Hans…When I First Met Patrick
I love going to China. I almost never talk to the person next to me on the flight—or any flights in general. But sitting next to me on the upper deck of that 747 was an interesting young man who asked me why I was flying over to Beijing. I am an author and am doing lectures on leadership. The Chinese are hungry to learn about our management and leadership styles that are very different than theirs.
William who sat next to me told me that he was flying over with a group of students that were going to Beijing to complete an MBA course for their master’s degrees. He wanted to know about my books, and thanks to Wi-Fi on airplanes; he pulled up Amazon and browsed through my titles.
The fun really started when his friend Patrick came up to join us on the upper deck. We really got animated and talked for a long time about leadership and generational views on the topic. What struck me from the outset about Patrick, that I really liked, was his passion for learning and his respect for my generation. Honestly, one of the big things that we Boomers feel in these later years of our lives is irrelevancy. The younger generations really wish we would beat it and get out of their way. They act as if we have nothing to offer them.
I did not sense that from Patrick, so that trip to China was the beginning of a great friendship.
Who is Hans Finzel?
Dr. Hans Finzel is a successful author, speaker and trusted authority in the field of leadership. Hans speaks, writes and teaches practical leadership based on real world experience. He has written ten books, including his international bestseller The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make
(David C Cook). Having trained leaders on five continents in his career, his books have been translated into over twenty foreign languages. Today, he serves as President of HDLeaders teaching and speaking globally on all things leadership. Hans and his wife, Donna have four children and live in Colorado. Why We Decided To Write This Book
I, Hans, remember Patrick calling me several times to complain about the Boomer buzz saw
he was running in to at his job. He works in California in the fresh produce industry, which is totally dominated and run by old-school Boomers. He wanted my advice, plus he just wanted to about how rough he was being treated as a young person getting into this industry. Even though I grew up in this industry helping my dad, I am treated with zero respect,
he complained. "And they want me to do everything their way. It’s like I have nothing to contribute and my ideas all suck. It wasn’t long before the two of us concluded,
Hey, we should write a book about this, because this problem is everywhere in America." Both generations have a choice, condemn or collaborate, reject or respect. To put it another way, dig in your heels and say it has to be my way or choose to meet each other halfway and try to work well together.
Both generations have a choice, condemn or collaborate, reject or respect.
The two of us had several phone conversations about how Boomers and Millennials actually could work better together. That is what this book is about—breaking up the cold war to help Boomers and Millennials thrive in the workplace and in life. More than just get along, each generation can and should learn to appreciate what each brings to the table.
Why Is Our Message So Urgent?
We both believe that this is an urgent message. A lot of productivity is being harmed by culture wars in the workplace. All across America, great people in offices are not getting along, team unity is suffering and passive aggressive behavior is holding back companies from maximum output. There is a huge opportunity cost for not getting along. Here is the roadmap for our journey ahead.
The Roadmap For Our Journey – In Case You Want To Know Where We Are Going!
1. Blast from the Past - The Generations 101 - Take a blast from the past and meet the generations working in the business world today while moving light speed into the new millennium. Review the timeline, structure, demographics, and mannerism to better acquaint yourself with each living generation.
2. Help! I’m a Workaholic - How Boomers Approach Work – Boomers have been the leaders of many companies and organizations for decades. This chapter talks about how Boomers approach things like work styles, organizational culture, physical space, and office environments.
3. Millennials Rewrite the Workplace – For Millennials, work is something you do , not somewhere you go . There are changes coming that include off-site work environments, non-traditional learning styles, different kinds of accountability, and a new meaning of workplace trust. These things will re-shape the workforce not just the workplace.
4. The Great Gulf in Technology: Natives versus Settlers - Millennials were born as natives into the high-tech world of today, whereas Boomers moved to that country as settlers. The differences in how technology is used in the workplace are dramatically highlighted in this chapter.
5. Millennial Wiring – What gets Patrick up in the morning? Millennials tend to think about themselves more than anything, so what motivates Millennials to wake up in the morning? Is it ME, ME, ME or is it the choice, decision, or event that is taking place that makes us get up? Time is a most valuable commodity that has an expiration date and needs to be grasped firmly before it runs out. In this chapter, we cover the passions and obsessions of Millennials.
6. How Marriage and Family Invade the Workplace: Differing Views of Marriage and Family – You might ask what marriage and family have to do with the workplace? Everything, when it comes to Millennials, since there is a very fuzzy line between work and personal life. We explore marriage and family from both generations’ points of view.
7. Swag - What is Swag? It’s a word that represents yourself and what you stand for. It encompasses everything from your clothing, tattoos, music, vehicles, and all the external things that make you you
. From dress codes at work and stereotypes of tattooed employees, swag is your style--not your work ethic. This is a very big deal for every generation—style matters.
8. You Just Don’t Get It
- Both sides of the aisle often have this attitude. We explore the judgmental generalizations that plague the workplace, and common complaints that we have about each other.
9. Can You Hear Me Now? – This chapter is a final conversation with Patrick and Hans. Feedback from both generations is given with helpful ways to engage for success. Our quest is to find mutual respect going both directions.
The Five Generations
There are so many ways that people slice and dice the generations. Dates for the generations are approximate and there is often overlap because there are no standard definitions for when generations begin and end.
A word of caution is a must: we have to be careful about describing these generations. I, Hans, feel like I have a lot of Millennial tendencies and my Millennial children at times act a lot like Boomers. As I get to know Patrick, he has a lot of Boomer traits. Yet with that caveat, there are well known differences that we highlight in our book.
While we are giving disclaimers, remember that if you are a Boomer reading this book you will say to yourself more than once when we describe Millennials, Hey, that describes me.
The other way around may also be true. Millennials do have Boomer values and attitudes that come out sometimes in some of you. It has a lot to do with the home you were raised in and where you grew up. But having said that, we are ready to survey the six living generations.
As a quick review in case this is new to you, there are five main generations that are alive today: The Greatest or Builders, Boomers, Generation X, the Millennials, and the iGens or Generation Z.
In this book, we focus on just two: Baby Boomers and Millennials.
Why are we focusing just on Boomers and Millennials in our book? They are the two largest generations in America today and the source of the greatest intergenerational friction. Yes we care about the other generations—but our focus is on these two biggies.
