About this ebook

Two thousand four hundred years ago, Socrates and others were sitting around a fire debating questions that we still do not have answers to today. What does it really mean to live a just life? What does it mean to be a good person? These dialogues took place over 725 years before the Council of Nicea and 1000 years before the Quran was written, and still remain relevant in all our lives to this day. It does not impose a moral code or set rules as to how we should live, but asks the reader to think, and to ask for themselves what are the answers to some of life's most important questions.

This version of The Republic of Plato - Book 1: Views on Justice, puts the ancient dialogues into modern language that is relatable and easy to understand, so that the book is fun to read, and most importantly, makes the reader think.

Justice as Honesty in Word and in Deed

Socrates was walking down the mountain from a festival of lights,

A group of children came up smiling full of laughter and delight.

"Come join us for our party, we have horses that are racing,

We have fun for friends and family, and dear Cephalus is waiting."

"Cephalus is there and horses you say?

Where is my good friend, I wish to meet him this day.

Ah! And there is Cephalus surrounded by kin,

I’m so happy to see him I don’t know where to begin."

Cephalus struck back, and stirred with a shudder,

It was Socrates himself, and nobody other.

As soon as he saw him, Cephalus rose full of cheer,

"Is that Soctraes I see? Is he finally here?

Oh Socrates, as age has started to show and as fewer friends come and go,

Bodily desires began to fade but my appetite for the mind will never change.

It brings me great cheer to host you in my home,

And to hear your questions on life, though the answers may be unknown."

    "Cephaus,
