    Dani was already in motion—slipping her bare feet into her shoes, pulling on her polar fleece jacket—before she processed exactly why she was getting up in the middle of the night and about to race outside in her T-shirt and flannel PJs.

    Something was going after her chickens in their coop in the backyard. The shrill squawks of Big Betty had woken Dani in the first place. Now, she heard the rapid fire complaints of Miss Darcy as well as the general alarm raised by Freida and Kim.

    Dani raced out of her bedroom, but then paused by the backdoor of the kitchen before going outside. Her heart pounded and sweat had broken out across her back. It wasn’t one of those damned raccoons, was it? Hopefully not, hopefully it was just one of the neighborhood cats. They were too well fed to actually eat any bird they killed—they just like playing with them. She was still angry about the bird she’d lost to them last summer, when she’d let the chickens out of their coop and into the rest of the backyard to enjoy the sunshine.

    If it wasn’t a cat, though, she needed to be armed.

    She dismissed the notion of grabbing one of the big knives sticking out
