When a Siamese mysteriously shows up at the shelter, Dara starts thinking she might be having a break down. The collar the cat is wearing looks like a cheap watch. No matter how many times Dara removes it, the cat ends up wearing it.

 

Her co-worker insists she's not putting the collar on.

 

And then one of the other shelter cats goes missing.

Bonnie Elizabeth could never decide what to do, so she wrote stories about amazing things and sometimes she even finished them. It was unusual to find such a cat even at the feline only shelter. Coming into her shift at the shelter, a crowded place in a strip mall storefront that always smelled vaguely of urine and vinegar, the cat had sat in the blue hard-sided travel kennel placed on Dara’s desk, its head nearly hitting the top, watching her, blue eyes unblinking.

Connie wasn’t around, but she must have been the one to place the cat on Dara’s desk, an old wooden thing that leaned slightly to the back so that her computer screen was perpetually forcing her to look up. At least Dara didn’t work there for more than twenty hours a week. The rest of the time she worked in a veterinarian’s office cleaning cages.

Soft music played in the background, nothing with any notes that went too high which would annoy the cats, nor a bass
