RHAPSODY IN BLUE
LUIZ IS FABULOUS in every sense of the word and is happy to tell you that at every opportunity. His brown skin is baby soft because he gets more facials than Jennifer Aniston, his dark hair is cropped fashionably close, and his lips are always glossed. Which, unfortunately, makes me think he’s been doing something with his boyfriend that isn’t repeatable in polite company.
He also thinks we’re soulmates (platonic, natch) because Luiz and Liza share three letters, and we both love vintage and historic fashion. Both work with it, in fact. He does resale—finds the stuff at estate sales, thrift stores, that sort of thing, and cleans it up, repairs it, and sells it for a tidy profit online.
Or to people like me. I do costuming for TV and movies, and right now, I’m the lead designer on a popular show in its fifth season, about a lady detective in 1920s Hollywood. It’s called Lady Detective. (Hey, I’m just the costume designer. Nobody asked for my input.) Clothing of that era can be hard to find and hard to fit on today’s actors, plus the heroine is pretty action-y, which means she’d shred authentic period pieces faster than TMZ shreds celebrities. So I design most of the clothes myself.
But Luiz, and a few other vintage costume aficionados I know (yes, we have a private Facebook group), keep an eye out for things I can use.
The show is popular.
