    BEAUTIFUL SOUL

    The room was dim, the gas lights turned down, the draperies closed even though it was mid-morning. Jennet could barely see the dark green and gold wallpaper or the brocade pattern of the sofa on which she sat, back erect, hands clasped nervously together.

    She certainly couldn’t see the features of the woman who sat on the wingback chair opposite her. A black veil shrouded her face; Jennet could just make out the brightness of her eyes, the motion of her mouth when she spoke, but that was it.

    Jennet wondered if Lady Vesta was in mourning. That might explain her desire to hire a companion, the job for which Jennet was currently being interviewed.

    The fragrant fire blazing in the grate made the room overly warm. Indeed, Jennet had noticed the house’s heat the moment she’d been ushered through the front
