    Who am I kidding? He is that special. And me? I’m just this girl.

    Sakura leaned back against her desk chair with a sigh, throwing her pen down on her journal. She didn’t have a chance with Daiki. Or Shou. Or any of the other boys.

    They were always too involved with their stupid video games and their basketball and their phones. They would never even notice a shy girl like her. She was as mousy as Kaori, one of her favorite anime characters.

    At least Kaori was smart. And could win at Mahjong just by glancing at the board. While Sakura had to study and work hard at her grades. There was no magic spirit horse to ride away on, no matter how she might try to transport herself into the posters that covered her walls. No magical cat bus to take her away from the hustle of Tokyo and out into quiet green hills.

    Sakura sighed and pushed her journal to the side, reaching for her school books.

    Wait. Gross! What was wrong with her hand?

    Sakura held up her right hand. It had changed. Instead of flesh, it had transformed into glass, along with her wrist and half of her forearm.

    Not smooth glass, no. From her knuckles grew sharp ridges down the back of her hand. Other ridges joined them, from her thumb and down her
