Chapter One

Tension zipped across my aching shoulders as I tightened my grip on the steering wheel of my car and struggled to see past the crusty ice forming on my windshield.

Oh, man give me a break with this crappy winter weather. Storms brought in a surge of patients to the hospital where I worked as a trauma nurse. That meant more patients and more stress for me. Thankfully tonight I wasn't going to work. Tonight, I had a doctor’s appointment and I could hardly wait to get there.

This winter had been agony with so many people coming into the hospital after suffering accidents. Many arrived wailing in pain, their bones broken from falls, or their bodies crushed in vehicle accidents; while other patients were wheeled in on gurneys. They were silent and near death.

Over the past few weeks I had pulled too many double shifts and now I was physically and mentally exhausted. I needed some serious downtime. I needed my doctor because he always knew exactly how to make me feel better.

As I cautiously turned my car onto the slippery parking lot, I gasped at the beauty of the oak trees lining the property. Their branches sparkled brilliantly with a thick layer of ice and the snow-drenched evergreen bushes glistened beneath the outdoor lights of the one-story clinic. Yeah, everything looked beautiful, but snow and ice could be a deadly combination if I wasn’t careful. Falling and breaking a hip or a leg was not what I was planning on doing tonight.

Tonight, I had better things to do. Much better things.

I parked the vehicle, got out and slammed the door shut. I slid over the ice toward the front door and shivered as icy fingers of frigid air tangled my hair. A minute later heat blasted against me as I slipped inside the building.

Immediately I spied the receptionist where she sat behind her desk. She looked lovely with her black hair styled in an updo and her chic glasses. She smiled warmly and waved at me.

Hi Georgianna, she said cheerfully.
