Kristin Sorra

Kristin Sorra is an award-winning children's book illustrator. Her parents immigrated from the Philippines to Baltimore, MD, where she was born. She earned her degree in Illustration from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, graduating with highest honors, after which she co-owned a digital coloring house that catered to comic book publishers. She illustrated for magazines, online games, hang tags, posters, stationery, textiles, and even designed Halloween costumes. Kristin lives in New York's Hudson Valley, with her family.

This book is a good way to show that a friend with an exceptionality may require a little more work than a friend without one. My Friend Has Autism (Friends With Disabilities) is the story of Nick and his friend Zach who is autistic. Nick has to be sure to pay attention to what Zach does and does not like. For example Zach does not like to be touched, but he loves to talk about airplanes. This story shows that someone can make a great friend, even if they have an exceptionality.

This book is of good quality. It shows the reader that people with Autism are normal. Not only does it tell a story of someone whose friend has autism, it gives facts about people who have autism, and the facts tie into the story. One such fact is, "many kids with autism can seem impolite. They don't understand that it's rude to walk away from someone who's talking to them." This is on a page that's showing the main character's friend walking away while he's showing him a magazine he got. It also doesn't show the character with autism as someone who can't do anything. He's just another one of this boy's friends. This promotes awareness and acceptance of autism.

This is a great book to use within the first few days of a classroom that has inclusion students with autism. It's a good way for children to learn about Autism and how to interact with students who have it. It teaches children to be patient and not to instruct but rather to show their new friend with autism how to do things within the classroom. I gave it five stars because I know a teacher who used this book, and she said that it did wonders in her classroom.
