- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Marcus and his friend Robby have been best friends forever. Robby has ADHD which is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. As we journey through their days, we see the downsides as well as the plus sides to ADHD. Robby has a hard time keeping still, quiet, and on task for long periods of time. Although in some situations this is not a bad thing, at school Robby seems to struggle. Talking out of turn, and moving around in his desk is not something that the teachers want. Marcus worries as well because he fears that they will get in trouble. This is really something to keep in mind as a teacher. Being aware of what ADHD is and knowing my students will benefit both them and me. Learning more even through this book can help me to maybe be more understanding and realize that ones talking out of turn or moving around may not be able to control it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5WOW! I loved this book! The content of the book is what I enjoyed the most. It is hard to find great books about students with disabilities. This book is about students who have ADHD. In the story, there is a boy named Marcus and Robby. Robby has ADHD. Marcus explains some of the things him and Robby do together and how Robby acts. For example, Marcus says, “Robby has a hard time waiting his turn in the lunch line. We play quiet games like Rock, Paper, Scissors to pass the time.” This gives students an idea of what they can do to help those with ADHD. Another thing I enjoyed about this book is that on every couple of pages there is a “Did you know?” One of them says, “Did you know? Kids who have ADHD are often creative and have great imaginations. This really helps students gain further insight about this disability. It also puts a positive twist on the disability because many people tend to have negative stereotypes. The message of the book is to put yourself in some one else’s shoes-- just because one doesn’t seem like you doesn’t mean they couldn’t be a really awesome friend.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I adored this book, being a special education major I am constantly in search of books about kids with special needs. This story is about to boys who are best friends and one of them just happens to have ADHD. The boy without the disability tells the reader all the fun stuff he does with his friend Robbie who happens to have ADHD. (Attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder) I loved that he would talk about just normal friend things they would do and then he would talk about things that were specific to ADHD like not being patient in the lunch line. As an amazing friend they would play rock, paper, scissors in line to pass the time and distract Robbie from just waiting in line. When I was in first grade all the students with disabilities were included into our classes and the students that did have disabilities were some of my best friends. I remember have very similar friendships as the two boys do in the story. Additionally I loved that on every other page in the story there was a fact about ADHD, it made the story more real and gave the reader a deeper insight to the disorder. The main idea of this story is that no matter what anyone has going on in their lives that everyone can be friends. In one part of the story it talked about how Robbie can have trouble making friends until they get to know him because then they love him and find him very funny. As readers we need to take away that everyone deserves a chance and we don't know who can be an amazing friend unless we talk to them first.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In my opinion, this book was very enjoyable. This language used in this book is an aspect that I liked. This book introduces ADHD, attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. The author introduces it in a way to inform the reader about some reasoning behind some actions or characteristics someone with ADHD might have. For example, “Sometimes Robby says or does things that get him into trouble. He may get angry and start fights with other kids”, and then there are facts about ADHD in “Did you know?” boxes. The book even has a glossary, index and helpful websites for readers who would like to know more about ADHD. Another aspect that I enjoyed about this book was the illustrations. The illustrator, Kristin Sorra, used chalk and paint to illustrate each picture. She used showing and lines to define the faces of characters in the book. The main idea of the book overall is to inform people about ADHD.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is a great book to teach students about children who have ADHD. I like this book because of the content in it. The book tells the story of a boy and his friend who has ADHD. In the book the boy talks about all the things that him and his friend do together. For example, “ Robby and I love talking about sports. But sometimes he talks when he shouldn’t. He isn’t doing it on purpose. But I worry he will get in trouble. “ The narrator doesn’t judge his friend, he just helps him focus and not get in trouble. Also I really like this book because on each page there is a “did you know?” fact about ADHD. Even though this book is fiction it give informational pieces about the disability for students to gain a further insight. The main idea of this book is for children to understand that people with disabilities are not that different and you should see what type of friend they could be.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is another installment in the Friends with Disabilities series. In this book, Marcus' friend Robby has something ADHD. Throughout the story, Marcus explains how Robby is different but still a great friend. just like any friend, Marcus looks out for Robby's well being. He helps his friend out when needed to ensure that Robby is able to succeed in what needs to be done. This book helps to point out that having a disability does not mean a person cannot have friends. The readers learns ways that they can help out a friend with ADHD along with other facts about the disability.
