Dad what does that thing do? my teenage son said, pointing at a surveillance camera in the corner of the living room.

I waved off my blonde haired only child and averted attention back to the real estate agent convincing me to buy a home we couldn’t afford.

The camera blinked a red eye in the center of the glass lens. I shrugged it off needing to ask ultimate questions. Does the home have hardwood floors? Granite countertops? What about HOA fees? Safe neighborhood? Any weird neighbors? These are deal breakers for my wife, I said, with a grin.

My heavyset realtor wearing business casual. I assumed fielded many HGTV inspired questions.

He laughed at the request as his gut ruffled his green Polo shirt with Better Homes and Garden logo on the pocket. I know. I know. Everyone wants the hardwoods, granite, and stainless steel appliances. Open concept for entertaining. Until the next fad rolls around, he said, wiping his brow of sweat and frustration.

Buying a home was not in the cards for the Dunn’s a few short years earlier. My construction business was tanking with no signs of coming back to life. Not for the faint of heart when global economies and housing markets rise and fall with the wind. Price of fuel, wood, and building materials dictate a lot for builders. My brothers and I resurfaced out of a housing bubble crash. Not good for Dunn Brother’s Construction.

Economy so bad that buying a house in the West Hills of Los Angeles equivalent of two holes in ones, on the same day at Riviera Country Club, with a putter. I didn’t believe in miracles or divine providence, of late. A new contract building a hundred homes in a wealthy suburb of LA, made me a believer in something bigger than myself. Change of circumstance fell from the sky.

The realtor pointed at vaulted ceilings in a living space. Long window almost floor to ceiling letting in massive amounts of California sun. He held up a flyer with the house specs. You like the vaulted ceilings and lots of light? On your wife’s ‘must have list’.

I nodded and paused a beat to enjoy the sun on my face. Been a long year. The cliche of smelling the roses had new meaning. I hadn’t stopped or smelled anything this year. The business days from me looking for a new job. And between accountant visits, lawyer consultations discussing bankruptcy, and a marriage devoid of romance. Warmth of a setting sun a moment of nirvana.

"Yep. Love the ceilings. Good light. My
