The most photographed spot in Jacqueline Mercer’s house is the gallery wall behind her living room sofa. Needless to say, when the force behind Instagram handle @Tinyandthehouse announced to her 18,000 followers she was trading in her orange velvet couch for an “impulse buy”, it was big news.
On the day we meet at her home in Turnpike Lane, north London, she’s literally just unwrapped the incredibly comfortable floral replacement – the old one was donated to a follower on a first come, first served basis. “I thought that was the fairest way,” she smiles.
Inviting us through to the kitchen for a cup of tea, Jac, who is a freelance shoe designer, tells us how she fell into interior social media by accident, two years ago.
“We were trying to sell this house and had seen another one just up the road in Tottenham,” she says as the water whistles through her stove-top kettle.
“We didn’t end up buying the other property, but the ; and they thought they’d like to feature our house in one of the supplements.”
