    Chapter 1

    DREAMS

    All individuals, except those people with sleep disorders, undergo a certain process while they are asleep. This process is better known as dreaming. As a matter of fact, most experts believe that people sleep in order to dream. Furthermore, experts explained that majority of the dreaming process occur when one is having a Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep. In cases that one is deprived of an REM sleep, an individual’s nervous system will make up for it at a later date.

    According to medical and scientific studies, the actual state of dreaming is considered a physical or physiological occurrence. However, the content of one’s dream is more of psychological. It is the product of the individual’s unconscious mind collaborating with one’s conscious experiences.

    There are instances when an individual could not understand or interpret what he or she dreamt of. It is because dreams are a bit creative in a sense that they make use of symbols. Most of these symbols are representations of events, feelings, or matters related to one’s personal life. However, there are those images termed as archetypal images, meaning these images have nothing to do with the individual’s personal life.

    Carl Jung, a renowned psychologist, explained that these archetypal images come from the collective knowledge known to mankind. In layman’s term, these are symbols recognizable to mankind across all time periods. Furthermore, his theory stated that these archetypal images are linked to very profound emotional matters, such as earlier life experiences, in contrast to typical dream images which are pertinent to current emotional
