A FEW WORDS ABOUT LEONARD COHEN
The Canadian music legend, Leonard Cohen is the most memorized for dramatic lyrics, emblematic songs and deep voice. He is much famous for the composition, Hallelujah
from the album ‘Various Positions’. Inducted into the prestigious Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Canadian Song Writers Hall of Fame and also into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Leonard Cohen was awarded with the Canada’s highest civilian honor, Order of Canada.
Born on 21 September 1934, to a Jewish family in Montreal, Leonard Cohen showed an interest in poetry in a younger age. Started practicing violin in an age of 13, he gave more concentration to writing during his studies in the Mc Gill University. The release of the book ‘Spice-Box of the Earth’, changed his entire career. He became an important literary voice in Canada with social and economic success of this book. After two more novels, The Favorite Game (1963) and Beautiful Losers (1966), and some poetry collections, he again returned to his passion- music.
Moving to New York, he began to pursue singing career. Though had some setbacks in early stages as he was in his 30s and older than the contemporaries, it was Judy Collins who found out his talents and used it in her album. Soon signed with the Colombia Records, Cohen released his debut album ‘Songs of Leonard Cohen’ though which he expressed emotions of love, spirituality and despair with his baritone lyrics. In the following years, he bloomed up with prolific verses and songs. ‘The Partisan’, ‘The Lady Midnight’ and ‘New Skin for the Old Ceremony’ are some from his early bests. The album ‘Death of a Ladies' Man’ along with Phil Spector showcased the drift of his music from the traditional style. His best known song ‘Hallelujah’ was released as a part of the record ‘Various positions’ in 1984.
In 1988 he released his ever best album, ‘I'm Your Man’ and its follow up ‘The Future’ in 1992. His come back to the music arena was in 2001 with ‘Ten New Songs’. After a series of world tours, Old Ideas (2012), Popular Problems (2014) were the last ones in his music list. This prolific singer dropped his last album ‘You Want It Darker’ just three weeks before his death on 7 November 2016 at age of 82.
