About this ebook
The Story of San Michele is the famous memoir by Swedish physician Axel Munthe (1857-1949). Written in English, it has been a best-seller in numerous languages. The author associated with a number of celebrities of his times, all of whom figure in the book. He also knew the very poorest, including immigrants and plague victims. He was an unabashed animal lover, and animals figure prominently, especially his alcoholic pet baboon, Billy. Several discussions with animals and various supernatural beings take place, and the final chapter actually happens after Munthe has died and includes his discussions with Saint Peter at the gates of Heaven. Munthe doesn't seem to take himself particularly seriously, but some of the things he discusses are very serious, such as his descriptions of rabies research, including euthanasia of human patients, and a suicide attempt by a man convinced he had been exposed to the disease. Worldwide, the book has been immensely successful.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/55535. The Story of San Michele, by Axel Munthe (read 23 Feb 2018) This book in 1930 was the No.1 non-fiction best seller in the U.S. and in 1931 it was the no. 2 nonfiction best seller there. I had long heard of the book and because of its status as a best seller thought about reading it, having no idea as to what it was about. , having the vague idea it was something about World War One. It is called non-fiction, but there is a lot of fantasy in it, as well as the autobiographical material. However it has no date in it so we never learn when things happen, except by indirection. It helps to know that the author was born 31 Oct 1857 in Sweden. He tells of his youth in Sweden to some extent and that he became a doctor. He pretends to some modesty in regard to his ability but relates many successes as a doctor--though claims he never billed his patients. He tells of building his home on Capri, where he spent his summers. His references to World War One are minimal, though he did become a British citizen apparently about the time Henry James did, but never tells us why. The book was published in 1929, but there is not a reference to Mussolini or to any political events. So I was not very interested in the book although there are some kind of stirring speculations towards the end, including a dream-like account of appearing before St. Peter and trying to get into Heaven, but definitely theologically-light. There are things to be said for some aspects of the book but it could have been much better if he had given some dates and told the story chronologically.
