    Disillusioned

Dude, come on! This is my best friend, Bridget, trying to convince me to ditch work tonight and go to a party instead. Granted my job sucks, but saving money for college is important to me.

Dude, I need my job! This is my reply to Bridget.

Okay, how about this. If you go with me tonight to Tyler’s party and skip work, I’ll talk to Jordan about having you start at the music store with us. I know he likes you. Bridget wiggles her eyebrows.

Bridget’s job rocks and she knows it. Her offer is incredibly tempting, as my current job does not rock. In fact, you could even say my job sucks. I work at the local pharmacy. Mr. Marris is extremely dull, and my shifts usually consist of restocking shelves and working the cash register, typically for older customers who are hard of hearing or ask embarrassing questions. Even the possibility of switching to the music store was so exponentially better than the pharmacy, that I’m sold.

You promise to talk to Jordan? I turn, briefly taking my eyes off the road and give her a look that says ‘I’m serious.’

Yes, Dahlia, I swear! Bridget hops up and down in her seat repeatedly. She always gets squirmy when she gets excited.

I turn the car into the grocery store parking lot and pull into a spot quickly. Alright, but at least let me call Katie to go in, so Mr. Marris isn’t stuck.

A few moments later, I don’t feel as guilty and we head the opposite way in my ancient Honda Prelude towards Tyler’s house. Tyler’s house is at the edge of town, so we have a ways to go. Tyler’s parents own a very large farm. It’s probably well over a hundred acres. Tyler takes advantage of this fact by throwing huge parties far away from his house, or any other form of civilization. I’ve only been to one other party and I left before they even lit the fire. Parties aren’t my typical scene. I have nothing against them. I just usually have other things I have to do, like work.

I pull down the dirt road Bridget directs me down and try to avoid the numerous potholes on the way. Its dusk, so it’s becoming more difficult to see, the further we go. Finally, we reach what must be the parking area. I slide my car in next to the last one in the row. We give ourselves a quick check in the mirror before we get out and I lock up. I don’t really need to bring anything other than my car keys and some chap-stick.

I follow Bridget down the worn path, deciphered through the overgrowth as a declaration to all of the parties before tonight.
