    CHAPTER ONE

    Death smelled like innocently sweet peppermint as it crawled between plaster wall and interior bland grey brick. The scratch scratch scratch of its hand-sized claws against creaking squishy insulation was drowned out by the thumping beat of swingy jazzy pop rock.

    The static from the huge black-meshed speakers in the cornered of the low flat ceiling out buzzed the deadly danger crawling within the walls, crawling closer and closer to the people sitting along the bar. The long line of stools was completely exposed to three sides of attack.

    The wall of cherrywood varnished shelves full of colorful liquors seemed safer than it was because of the seemingly heavier appearance of the wood compared to the plaster of the other walls. The planks of even darker varnished wood behind the many colorfully but crudely labeled glass bottles had few fewer dents since it was rarely the target of the occasional bottle thrown by an angry drunk, but no, a sturdier wall?

    Just hopeful thinking. Christmas was months away too.
