    The desert, even with the sun far overhead, felt as cool as a breezy storage basement. Worse, the dry winds sucked water out of Naucacus quicker than salt dehydrates a slug. Bringing the spongy water skin to his lips, Naucacus squeezed the water skin harder than the last time he drank from it. The flaccid thing only held a couple of gulps of water more.

    He began the guttural grunts of the dwarven chant to call forth the Water Sprite’s Light - the very first dwarven chant that Sokina had taught him. He remembered the elf girl’s patience despite hours of his human mouth mangling the words. Mistakes always produced side-effects, from silly squishy sounds to harmless thunder and lightning. When he finally got the chant right, Naucacus dropped the liquid light onto her foot. She squeaked a cry and then could not stop giggling at him, no matter how much he tried to console her. It all ended with a kiss.

    But then the memory of her murder jolted his mind. Treshgon, Sokina’s brother, stabbed her stomach with Naucacus’ dagger. Then he shoved his bleeding sister off a cliff as her human lover ran to her rescue.
