Hiding The Truth - Kent Hamilton

    No More Secrets

    Kathy?

Kathy rubbed her face with one sweaty hand, thankful for the chance to stop churning the butter. In here, Paul!

Her husband poked his head through the door. Kathy? I have to go and see Anna. Will you be all right here? I won’t be long.

Kathy frowned. Yes, I’ll be fine. Paul – is something the matter?

Paul sighed, coming into the kitchen, holding his hat in his hands. Nothing’s the matter, Kathy but I do need to speak to Anna about something. It’s pretty urgent.

    What is it?

    There was a long silence.

Paul, I’m your wife. You can tell me!

He ran a hand through his hair. I’ve never talked to you about Daniel, have I?

No, you haven’t. Who is he? Kathy’s face grew puzzled. There was no-one she knew about these parts called Daniel.

    He’s my brother.

Kathy’s eyes widened. Your brother? she whispered, trying to process the new information. We’ve been married for almost a year, and you’ve never got around to telling me you’ve got a brother? Her temper began to rise as she saw his shamefaced look.

    I’m sorry, he ventured, weakly.

Don’t tell me you’re sorry now, Paul! Kathy retorted. Neither you nor Anna have once had the decency to tell me that you have a brother called Daniel. Are there any more siblings I should know about or have you kept them from me too?

No, no, Paul replied, trying to sooth her swiftly fraying temper. I guess we never got round to it because, well, to be honest with you Kathy, we don’t talk about him much.

Kathy drew in a long breath, refusing to let her anger fully take hold. She was equally angry and sad that her husband and best friend had never shared with her the news that they had a brother. It was like a punch to the gut. Kathy had shared everything about her life, including her life with John. She’d told him about the sadness and the pain she’d gone through and thought he’d been as open with her and she’d been with him. The joy of believing that they now had no secrets between them now, after everything they’d gone through, vanished like smoke. Apparently she’d been completely wrong.

Her sadness must have shown on her face because Paul grabbed her hand and groaned, running a hand through his hair. I’ve really upset you, haven’t I? I’m sorry, Kathy.

I didn’t think there were any secrets between us any more, Paul, she said, quietly, the anger ebbing from her. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t share this with me.

Because he’s an embarrassment! Paul cried, dropping her hand and pacing back towards the door. He is a low down, good-for-nothing, lazy ass excuse for a man!

And you think an outlaw is the epitome of a family’s pride? Kathy shot back, opening an old wound.

Paul closed his eyes, letting out a sound of sheer frustration. You don’t understand, he exclaimed. Anna and I told him we never wanted to see him again unless he’d actually made something of himself.

    And has he?

No! Paul roared, his anger flaring. The man’s been thrown out of the army in disgrace! Now he’s begging to come here. He flopped into a kitchen chair, placed his elbows on the table and buried his face in his hands.

Kathy paused for a moment, surveying her scene. Will Anna be upset? she asked, quietly.

Yes, came his muffled reply. I wanted to warn her before he turns up on her doorstep.

Kathy frowned. He knows where you live?

I’ve always let him know where I am, Paul replied, lifting his head. He’s family. I never wanted to leave him completely alone, even though he’s a good for nothing waste of space.

    Kathy inhaled a long breath,
