Even as Paul turned the key, he felt anxious. ‘This is ridiculous,’ he told himself crossly. ‘I love Stephanie. She might be a successful solicitor, but she’s still my wife.’

He stepped into the hall and called out her name, his voice ringing out in the still and quiet house. There was no reply. He tried again, but the result was the same.

He thought back to the way things used to be before his wife became so successful. Back then, she hardly ever worked late. Her commute was shorter than his, so most days when he got home from work she’d already be there. The second she heard his key in the lock, she would run to greet him with a hug.

All that had changed six months ago when she got promoted. He loved that she was doing so well, but success came at a price. The closeness they used to share
