The holidays had begun, as the family was now en route to their destination. They drove in the small car that Lorcia usually used in picking up Petra from school. Charles was the driver while Lorcia sat beside him and Petra sat at the back, staring through the windows as they journeyed into an unfamiliar path. After a while of driving, Lorcia offered to take over the wheel but Charles wasn’t keen on giving it away although he appeared a little weary.
Honey, I can do it. Really, I can.
She urged him on.
You know where we’re heading to?
He said, not looking at her.
Of course, the Nest.
She blurted.
Alright, but hurry, so we get there before 9.
Charles said, and then got down from the car.
Alright.
She cheerfully replied, and then went behind the wheel. Then she began to drive while glancing around her new environment. It was about 7.30pm now and the lodge was about an hour more ahead. The road side was littered with sellers of clothing, food and other items you couldn’t quite make out unless you were to stop close by them. And that’s exactly what she did, right after he had fallen asleep. She stopped by a clothing stand and bought a ton of them because they were really cheap. Then she bought some food and then some fancy balloons and a whole lot of other things which she placed at the back seat where Petra was now reclining. Then she carried on with the journey, driving and eating at the same time. She was full of smiles and still glancing around when suddenly, Charles woke up. He yawned, and then glanced at her in a half-awake way but said nothing. Lorcia didn’t see him but then moments later, he said in a soft, sleepy tone, Where are we?
You’re up.
She replied, glancing at him.
Where are we?
He repeated, glancing around him.
We are...on holiday!
She said, and then chuckled. Then he wiped his face and then looked at her, surprised, and then said, Are we still driving?
Yes, I’m driving. I took over from you, don’t you remember?
"That was about...
they both said.
And you’re still here?
Charles cried, looking at her.
"Shh...Petra is asleep. I’m still driving. I haven’t been sleeping-
Fine, let me drive then. Get down.
Charles cried, angry, and then got down from the car. Then he quickly walked up to the driver’s seat, but as he was about to get into it, he saw the collection of items at the back seat. He stared at them, stunned, and then looked at Lorcia.
What?
She said, sounding a bit angry.
What’s this? And where is Petra?
He said.
What’s what?
She snapped, glancing at him.
The items at the backseat.
I bought them. Because I need them.
She glanced behind her saying.
What about Petra, where is she?
He said, and then seconds later, quickly opened the door to the back seat and then began to clear up the things, throwing them out of the car until he discovered her buried beneath them.
Petra!
They both cried, and then Charles quickly carried her up and then out of the car. Then Lorcia tried to touch her but he swung around, hitting her with her feet.
Ouch!
She exclaimed.
Stupid!
He remarked, and then continued, "How could you do this? You could have killed her-
But I didn’t!
She barked in response.
"You’re so irresponsible...so heartless-
It wasn’t intentional! I could never have planed something like that.
She said, and then began to pick up the items he had thrown out of the car.
And what is she doing?
Charles said, angry, looking at her.
I can’t believe this.
He said, and then placed Petra down onto the backseat and then began picking up the items and throwing them further away from Lorcia. In response, Lorcia fought him, and then she stopped retrieving the items and then began to hit him with her hands while he shielded himself with his. Minutes later, Petra awoke, partly due to the noise from the two grown-ups. Then she sat up and saw them, still battering each other. This time around, Lorcia was the one shielding up with her hands as Charles hit her.
Dad!
She cried, because she couldn’t believe it and instantly, they stopped and stared at her direction.
Petra,
they both called, and then Charles began to walk hurriedly up to her.
Baby...
Lorcia said, and then hurried after him.
Sweet heart, are you okay?
Charles said, looking at her.
I’m fine,
she softly replied, nodding.
Sweet heart, are you okay?
"I’m-
"Don’t answer her. She nearly killed you-
I didn’t. It was a mistake!
Lorcia screamed back and then they began to argue again. Petra called out their titles, Mum, Dad...but they didn’t hear her or were more focused on their argument. She appeared a bit uneasy and then glanced around and saw that they were all alone in a dark place, with only a shallow glow of street light brightening them up.
Dad! Mum!
She screamed, and then they stopped and looked at her direction, yet another time.
Baby, what is it, are you hungry, I’ve got food...
Lorcia hurried up to her and then began searching through a plastic bag for some of the food she had bought.
Dad, what are we doing here? I’m scared.
She said, looking visibly shaken, as she glanced about the dark place. Then Charles looked around and he became frightened too.
Honey!
He cried, and then Lorcia stared at him, and inquired with a little frown, What?
We need to go. Get in the car, quickly.
He said, and then got into it.
Not without my things,
she said, moments later, but he had already turned on the engine and then she slapped the car with her right palm and then cried, I’m not leaving without my things!
Then Charles screamed back, Look around you!
And then she glanced about her and realized where they were. Then immediately, she sat down beside him and he drove away at top speed, causing all three of them to bang their heads. Lorcia banged hers against the dash board whereas he did against the wheel and Petra against the driver’s seat. But none of them complained because it was quite scary, where they were running from.
Finally, they reached the Nest, a beautiful 3-star resort. It glittered with white light and a calming melody played in the background. But neither Lorcia nor Charles seemed excited in anyway.
We’re here.
He quietly said, after about a minute of stopping the car at the park. Then Lorcia glanced about and then kept her eyes at the entrance which looked like heaven’s gate.
Is it...3 stars?
She said, sounding a bit uncertain, looking at him.
It is,
he said, softly, nodding.
Okay, let’s get down now.
He said, some moments later. It was clear that they were still recovering from the shock they left behind. Charles
