    Volume I

    The Elf and the Barbarian

    Chapter One

Dustin is a good friend of mine that I’ve known for a few years. We spend most of our time chatting online, playing video games together. He makes me laugh with his sarcastic humour and I’ve confided in him more than I’ve told any friends I’ve known for a lifetime. I confessed to him about all the times I practiced making out with my teddy bears as a little girl, and embarrassingly, I cried to him after my first pathetic relationship ended. I only dated the guy for a month, but at 23 years old, it felt like a huge hit to my ego. He’s opened up about his private life, too. I know a lot about his parents’ divorce; I also know that he’s lost count of sexual partners, but has always gotten drunk in order to even talk to girls.

I think Dustin is probably the friend I feel most comfortable around. That is, until I remember the time we met up for coffee about six months ago. The thing about nerds like me and Dustin is that all the confidence we gain is from behind the safety of a screen. I spent the entire hour stuttering and tapping my foot between awkward silences. I wondered why he didn’t get drunk before meeting me so that he could stop staring at the table. We haven’t spoken about it since, but neither of us has attempted to meet offline again.

Two weeks ago, I mentioned to Dustin that I had been playing Dungeons and Dragons at the local comic book shop here and there.

Oh, really? Dustin’s voice raised an octave into my headset and I cringed.

Yeah, it’s kind of fun. Like real life video games. I can be a character and not feel weird talking to people. Plus, it gets me out of the basement once in a while. I chuckled.

Have you ever been interested in LARPing? He asked.

    What’s that?

Live action role playing – basically dungeons and dragons, but with costumes. He explained.

Oh, I thought over the idea. Yeah, that could totally be fun. Probably would get you into character better.

Dustin went quiet as we continued shooting the enemy on screen. As the game ended, he shyly stated I kind of do LARPing in a quiet voice.

Oh, don’t be embarrassed, Dustin! That’s cool from my point of view. I shrugged off his embarrassment.

Well, I mean, it’s not quite that, he continued. We spin it into Live Action Sex Play. I host it once a month and it’s attracted a few attendees from our city.

Uhh, what?! I was shocked and also confused. Did Dustin organize a giant orgy every month? The shy awkward guy I met in a coffee shop? No, he couldn’t.

I rent out a warehouse and we use the loading bays for rooms to play out different scenarios. He explained. It’s pretty simple. You pick a character, dress up, there’s dice, and you kind of just go for it.

Go for what? My mysterious friend intrigued me. I had hooked up with a few guys, including my short-lived ex- boyfriend, but I hadn’t really explored sex beyond just using the bed that was available. The idea of dressing in costume sounded fun to me, but I had no idea how it’d be incorporated into sex.

Sex, Aubrey. Dustin sighed. It’s weird, sorry.

No, I hesitated. So he does organize a giant sex party every month. Dustin is a lot more adventurous than he’s let on. Not weird, just – I wouldn’t even know how that works. You know I’m basically a virgin.

Dustin laughed. Well, it’s all consensual. You roll dice if you wanna spice it up, tease each other, that sort of thing. Otherwise, it’s just trying to role play and having sex with whoever you feel comfortable with. Sometimes people don’t even want sex and just hang out, but it’s a good way to meet potential partners anyways.

Hmm. I was unsure of how to add to the conversation. I never imagined shy, nerdy Dustin asking people to have sex in a warehouse. Now I knew why he had to be drunk all the time. I’d probably have to be drunk, too.

Would – Dustin cut himself off, then cleared his throat and continued. Would you want to check it out? Y-you don’t have to participate of course! Just bring a costume and see what happens.

I could feel my face flush. I’ve just been invited to a sex party. What the fuck? U-uh, let me think about it.

Yeah, no problem. It’s at the Bulk Market warehouse down on 50th Street in two weekends from now. Starts ten at night.
