There were very few places I wanted to be less than in the pool house in the backyard of my wife’s friend from work’s husband, sitting alongside him while he pounds back beers from his mini-fridge that was chock full of small batch, artisanal bottles with corny names. Cooling my hand off was a green bottle with a black labels featuring a neon-colored zombie, the beer itself fine, if not just a normal, hoppy IPA mess that I wasn’t into. I’d protested and tried to get out of coming to Ed and Ginny’s all week, but Marla insisted. Ginny was a good friend of hers and they had a pool, which we got to use before the girls drifted into the house to talk about whatever and they left me with Ed.

Ed seemed… fine, but he was so many things I didn’t get or care about. A trust fund kid with slumlord parents who became a cop because he wanted to be a detective, but seemed to have no real aptitude for detective work, instead replaced his personality with a collection of thin blue line shirts and paraphernalia. We’d met a few times at various work events for our wives and been stuck at the same tables, or just those awkward moments where the girls ran off, leaving us to fill space with small talk. All of that culminated with me sitting on the couch in his man cave watching a recap show on ESPN while he pounded back the brews and grew increasingly loopy, to the extent that he was laid back on the couch, beer in-hand, and was grumbling at the TV.
